If you haven’t made the jump yet from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, it’s easy to do, writes Matthew de Beer on Skype’s Tips & Tricks blog.
“I call it a jump but really it’s more of a short hop. Your files, desktop applications, user accounts and settings will come with you and you can keep working while the update is taking place, so you can get the latest of Skype and Windows without fuss.”
De Beer offers some tips to get you ready for the update. First, make sure you’re not already using Windows 8.1. To check your version, type PC Info on the Start screen to start search and select PC Info from the results. Next to Edition you will see your version of Windows. If you don’t see PC info, or you don’t have a Start screen, chances are you still need to get Windows 8, he writes.
Next, you’re probably getting automatic Windows updates already. However, in case you disabled automatic updates, you might need to perform a manual check before installing Windows 8.1.
To manually check for updates:
• Go to the Start screen and swipe in from the right or press Win+C to open the charms.
• Select Settings > Change PC settings > Update and recovery.
• Click or tap Check now.
