In holiday blockbuster season, there can be a lot of add-on perks, but this has got to be up there as one of the more original mass offerings: United Kingdom fans looking forward to “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” will soon be able to download a free 3D printer blueprint of “The Key to Erebor” – a major artifact in the film’s plot.
On Dec. 13, the same day the second installment of “The Hobbit” trilogy is released in the U.K., the blueprint will be available within the film’s Ads-in-Apps on Windows 8. As the Microsoft Advertising Blog reports, after downloading it from the ad, fans can “use a 3D printer to create their very own keepsake.”
In this creative ad campaign, Microsoft has worked closely with Warner Bros. U.K. and its U.K. agencies, PHD and Think Jam, “to co-create a digital advertising solution that is truly at the forefront of global innovation.” Fans might also appreciate the interactive deep-dive into the film that includes information about characters, events and artifacts, actor bios – as well as behind-the-scenes videos.
