InfraStructs is a Microsoft Research project that lets you embed shapes, watermarks and codes within a 3D-printed object. The embedded information can be read back via terahertz scanning and, unlike with printed codes or RFID, it’s invisible and doesn’t require circuits or antennas to be transmitted.

Hear more about this promising technology in this IEEE Spectrum interview with researcher Andy Wilson, who presented the project at SIGGRAPH 2013 and co-authored the related paper “InfraStructs: Fabricating Information Inside Physical Objects for Imaging in the Terahertz Region” with intern Karl Willis.
