Hyper-V: Configure VLAN Trunk on Kemp LoadMaster

$

One of the Load Balancers that we have in our lab is LoadMaster from Kemp Technologies. We already published an article on how to deploy it:

UC Lobby: Deploying Kemp Technologies Free LoadMaster as Lab Load Balancer/Reverse Proxy
http://blogs.technet.com/b/uclobby/archive/2015/03/12/deploying-kemp-technologies-free-loadmaster-as-lab-load-balancer-reverse-proxy.aspx

Why do we need to enable VLANTrunk? The reason for this is that our lab "router" reached the maximum number of Virtual network adapters that we can add in Hyper-V (8 network adapters + 4 legacy network adapters):

Hyper-V scalability in Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj680093.aspx

By enabling VLAN Trunk on the Network Adapter we can bypass that limitation.

In this post, we show you how to enable VLAN Trunk in Hyper-V and configure Kemp LoadMaster. Note that the steps in Hyper-V can also be used for other types of Virtual Machines.

To change the adapter mode to Trunk we need to use PowerShell on the Physical Host. The Network Adapters associated to a Virtual Machine can be listed by running:

Get-VMNetworkAdapter -VMname "LB01" | Select VMName, SwitchName | ft -AutoSize
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh848526(v=wps.630).aspx

KempVLAN01

So, we know that we want to change the mode to Trunk on the Network Adapter connected to "Gears". Also, we specifically want to leave VLAN0 as default and enable two VLANs in the Trunk:

Get-VMNetworkAdapter -VMname "LB01" | ?{$_.switchname -eq "Gears"} | Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan -Trunk -NativeVlanId 0 -AllowedVlanIdList "1301,1302"

KempVLAN02
Note: The Default VLAN will be automatically added to the allowed list.

Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh848475(v=wps.630).aspx

Now that we have enabled VLANTrunk, the next step takes us to the Kemp LoadMaster Web Management interface. In System Configuration> Interfaces> eth3— this being the interface in which we want to configure the different VLANs —, we need to click on VLAN Configuration:

KempVLAN03

In the next screen, we specify the VLAN ID:

KempVLAN04

After adding the VLAN, a new drop-down list will be added to System Configuration> Interfaces:

KempVLAN05KempVLAN06

By selecting the VLAN we can configure the IP address:

KempVLAN07

We can now ping the above-mentioned interface:

KempVLAN08

Finally, the Virtual Services status will show as "Up":

KempVLAN09

I found out about a neat feature for adding in custom tiles to the app launcher.

Here are the steps:

1) Click the Office 365 admin click Company Profile > Custom tiles > Add

Demystify Offline Files

$

Thanks to Hubert Sachs from the German networking team to translate one of his popular blog into English. The blog demystify the core Offline Files concepts. The content below is from Hubert.

***************************************************

Hello everyone,

From time to time we receive support inquiries about Offline File related problems. The symptoms range from clients which do not come online anymore, which cannot sync, which throw plenty of sync-errors or sync-conflicts up to paths that cannot be reached in SlowLink mode although there should be no offline files active on these paths.

These problems have one thing in common: the root cause can be found in the employed Offline File concepts and can only be solved through a new and sustainable concept for the deployment of Offline Files in that environment.

The migration from an old concept to a new concept often implies the usage of the FormatDatabase Registry Keys (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942974/en-us) to clean up the faulty client configuration. Obviously this brings up questions regarding backup of the offline available data on the clients (that might not have synced for months), which usually lead to months long migration projects.

To avoid the lengthy migration, I want to help the Administrators to build sound Offline Files concepts, to enable them develop flexible plans.

The following are some key concepts in Offline Files.

The 5 ways of offline availability

There are 5 ways files/folders can get into the Offline Cache of the Client and a related scope and partnership will be created within Offline Files. We need to get administrative control over all of them and maintain them.

  •  Files made offline available automatically by Folder Redirection

When configuring a Folder Redirection policy, an Offline Partnership will be automatically created for each redirected folder.

Through configuration of “Do not automatically make Redirected Folders available Offline“, this automatism can be disabled. See http://gpsearch.azurewebsites.net/#293

  •  Administrative assigned Offline Files

The admin can configure paths in a group policy that will be made available offline by the client.

See http://gpsearch.azurewebsites.net/#2056

  •  User making content ‘always available’ by selecting this option in the context menu of a file/ folder

By default the user can decide what paths he/she wants to make offline available.

This can and should be disabled by the Policy “Remove Make Available Offline Command” in order to not get unforeseen partnerships e.g. on group drives. See: http://gpsearch.azurewebsites.net/#7857

  • Caching settings of a share on a file server

For each CIFS share these settings are available:
“Only the files and programs that users specify are available offline” (basically: The Client can cache if it wants to) which is the default in Windows,
“No files and programs from the shared folder are available offline” (basically: No caching allowed here), and “All files and programs that users open from the shared folder are automatically available offline” (basically: The Client has to cache).

When the Client access a share that is configured to “The Client has to cache” the Client will create a sync partnership and will start to sync the files that have been opened to the client.

In that Regards the settings on the respective shares have to be checked / corrected.

  •  LinkTargetCaching behavior when creating an .lnk file on an offline available path

Per default the target of .Ink Shortcuts will be made offline available if the .Ink file itself is made offline available.

A user could therefore unintentional create an Offline partnership against a group share if this target is on a share that isn’t yet offline available. This option is by default enabled to make sure that users have the expected files available when working with shortcuts. The drawback is that slow link policies will also apply to this new share and data that isn’t cached will not be available any more when the share transitions to slow connection.

This can be controlled by the LinkTargetCaching Registry Key:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817275/en-us

Permission on the file server structure

Because Offline Files also need to sync data from other (not currently logged on) users on the computer, the Offline File sync does not exclusively take place in the rights context of the logged on user. Thus, Offline Files require a set of minimum permissions to be able to sync (and in fact work) correctly. Not setting the permissions correctly on the file server will cause sync problems, can prevent the client from switching to online mode and a host of other problems (files created offline won’t sync back to the server).

The required minimum permissions for the share, the NTFS permissions of the shared folder and the permissions for each folder in the path are documented in: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2512089/en-us.

Scopes andcachedfiles

Offline Files considers each share (\\Server\Share) as a scope. Each access to a network path will be checked against the list of scopes which Offline Files has partly or fully cached.

Note here that \\Server\Share is treated completely independently from \\Server.contoso.com\Share. As a result administrators must ensure that only the FQDN paths are used for drive mappings, redirections and DFSN paths.

If a match is found Offline files will be handling the request and among other things decide if the request should be satisfied from the Server (Online Mode) or from the local Cache (Offline mode).
Thus the Scope is the instance that decides if a paths is online or offline and it is always the complete share that is taken offline. That said, there are situations where only specific files are treated as offline for example when they are in a synchronization conflict. You can also configure a subset of a scope to be always offline and only synced during logon and logoff (this is called suspending and can be configured through
http://gpsearch.azurewebsites.net/#2584).

If Offline Files treats a scope as offline, you can only use what is locally cached.
In Case you only made a subset of
\\Server\Share available offline, you can only reach this subset of data in offline mode and you lose access to other branches that are not in the cache until you switch back to online mode. While offline greyed out icons identify data that is NOT cached but available as name in the Offline Files database only for consistency.

What part of a scope is offline available is very important to understand especially in case of DFS Namespaces in order to make meaningful decisions about how to design the directory structures on the server site.

It makes sense to host data that should be offline available in a different scope than the data that should not be offline available. Here it is common practice to host users offline available home shares in a separate DFS Namespace than not offline available Group shares.

Slowlink Mode and Background Sync.

With the policy “Configure slow-link mode” threshold values for latency and/or bandwidth can be defined. Those values can be applied to all (indicated by an ‘*’) or individual paths.

If for example the latency on the connection raises above the threshold value offline files will switch into offline state. See http://gpsearch.azurewebsites.net/#2093

When deploying Offline Files on DFS paths, it might make sense to defined very high latency values for the DFS-root so the root itself cannot switch to offline mode due to a slow link, but the deeper paths can. This is because the DFSN root share is treated by offline files in the same way as any other share that can go offline (slow connection).
For all the details see the blog of my colleague Ned Pyle:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/askds/archive/2011/12/14/slow-link-with-windows-7-and-dfs-namespaces.aspx

When the Client switches to offline (slow link) mode, the policy “configure background sync” governs if and how often the client will try to sync with the server which is important to still sync the data back to the server for backup and consistency:
See
http://gpsearch.azurewebsites.net/#2095

It is not recommended to configure the background sync frequency to a very low value (minimum should be 30 minutes).

Migration of offline available data to other paths

Avoid this Scenario at all cost!

In http://support.microsoft.com/kb/977229/en-us two supported ways to migrate offline available data without reset of the client cache (and therefore resync) are described.
One way applies only to Offline Availability via Folder Redirection (automatic move done by the folder redirection service), the other to all other ways of Offline availability (manual by script).

Both ways have in common that you have to follow the KB Article to the letter if you want to have success and you must be up to date with all binaries on the client (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2820927).

As you can see from the first KB you have to follow a sequence of steps including Changes in AD/Fileserver/Infrastructure and on the Client.
From my experience this is seldom possible to do for a larger number of clients and it is very hard to automate.

Therefore the use of DFS for abstraction of logical paths and physical paths is strongly recommended.
In case you want to migrate offline available data on a DFS paths you just need to logoff the client, and change the paths the DFS Link is pointing to.

As the path used by offline files does not change, offline files won’t realize the migration as long as you preserved the filestate for example by using robocopy.

However when using Offline Files on DFS (or Roaming Profiles or DFSR) make sure you stay within the supported limits:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/askds/archive/2010/09/01/microsoft-s-support-statement-around-replicated-user-profile-data.aspx

Also note here that the path change from NetBios name to FQDN name is also a full blown move as Offline Files treats these 2 although ending up at the same data as different paths. Here the ‘Verify Old and New folder redirection targets‘ policy mentioned in 2820927 has to be set.

Configurations & scenarios that should be avoided

  • Firstly the same set of data should not be made available offline in different ways!
For example: Folder Redirection with offline availability on the path \\Server\Share\Username\MyDocuments, in addition administrative assigned Offline Files on the path \\Server\Share\Username Here the subfolder MyDocuments has been made available offline in two different ways. This nested offline availability is something offline files doesn’t cope well with in my experience.

  • Another scenario is the use of several machines simultaneously by the same user.

For example, a laptop with offline availability and a desktop machine without offline availability.
In this scenario you have to ensure that the client using offline availability does not fall into offline mode for example due to SlowLink Mode. If it does, the user can inadvertently change a file on the server and in the local cache of the offline client, thus resulting in a sync conflict, the next time the laptop switches to online mode. The same is valid for data that is used by several users. These data are unfit to be used with Offline Files.

  • Also, avoid redirecting the appdata directory. This can cause severe delays (depending on network performance) for applications on the client that expect that their data to be stored on a local disk!

I think it should be self-explanatory that before Offline Files are deployed to the clients, they should get the latest hotfixes for Offline Files (2820927), Fileservices (client and server 2899011) as well as the latest Security Updates installed. Furthermore a patch management is required to keep those components up to date.

On a related note, if you are planning for new client deployment, and exploring new solutions for user data offline access, I highly recommend you to look into the new feature “Work Folders” introduced in Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows 8.1. To find more about the topic, see here https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn265974.aspx.

I hope this helped you understanding offline files a bit better and enables you to build sound and solid concepts.

With best Regards
Hubert

Weekend Scripter: Upgrade to Windows 10

Summary: Teresa Wilson, Windows PowerShell MVP, talks about upgrading to Windows 10.

Teresa Wilson, AKA the Scripting Wife, is here. I first wanted to mention that Ed and I will be in Atlanta on August 21 for TechStravaganza. At the time I am writing this there are 22 tickets remaining, so hurry and sign-up if you would like to attend. It is a free event.

Ed is somewhere playing with Windows 10, and he left me on my own to upgrade my computer. He says it will be a good experience for me. I am not sure what he really means by that. But I am quite confidant that I can do this, and it will be a good experience.

Steps to upgrade to Windows 10

There are several things I need to do to make sure that things go well. The first thing I want to do is back up my data. This is pretty easy because I have all of my data stored in a single folder. I just copy that to my One Drive online storage.

The next thing I do is make sure that I have my email account information written down. I use three different email accounts, and I want to make sure I know how to reconfigure them when the installation is complete.

I am planning on doing a fresh install because I need to clean-up my computer anyway. Luckily, I have an MSDN account, so I download Windows 10, burn a DVD, and get ready for my installation.

Installation is quick

I boot off of the DVD, and shortly I am presented with the installation screen. I choose US English and click Next.

Image of menu

I choose to install it now.

Image of menu

I then have to enter my registration number, and select that I want to do an advanced fresh install. I select the disk and format it. Then the Windows setup begins copying files and proceeds with the installation.

Image of menu

When the installation is complete, the next screen asks about logging on and asks if I want to do a quick setup. I say OK.

Image of menu

Now it configures my applications.

Image of menu

A few minutes later, I am presented with the start screen. I click the Edge web browser and enter my favorite website:

Image of menu

Cool, it works! So I think I am going to play around with Windows 10 for a little while. Windows automation is all about reducing work, and so I am not going to reinvent the wheel. There is a great series of articles written by Deb Shinder called Windows 10: Nearing the Finish Line that I really enjoyed reading. I hope you will enjoy them too.

~Teresa

I invite you to follow me on Twitter and Facebook. If you have any questions, send email to me at scripter@microsoft.com, or post your questions on the Official Scripting Guys Forum. See you tomorrow. Until then, peace.

How to force Microsoft Edge to Open the Application Catalog in Internet Explorer

$

So as we are getting excited to start finally deploying Windows 10 in production with Configuration Manager we get the agent installed and start trying to test out Application Deployments and go to open the Application Catalog and BAM… we get an error since our default browser is now Microsoft Edge in Windows 10 which does not support Silverlight.  Well this is a bit problematic isn't it.  Before the question comes in I have no idea if Edge will support Silverlight or when we will remove Silverlight from the application catalog so lets look at our options.

image

Well we have a few options I guess we could change the default web browser to IE11 by opening up settings –> System –> Default apps and changing the web browser to IE11 instead of Microsoft Edge.

image

No way I just got my shiny new Windows 10 I want to give Microsoft Edge a shot.  This is our preferred method and will leverage Enterprise Mode and the enterprise mode site list.  Below are the steps needed to setup Group Policy but this could also be setup using the registry keys listed below and a local site list if needed with Compliance Settings as well.

Set up Microsoft Edge to use the Enterprise Mode site list

You must turn on the Use Enterprise Mode Site List Group Policy setting before Microsoft Edge can use the Enterprise Mode site list. This Group Policy applies to both Microsoft Edge and IE11, letting Microsoft Edge switch to IE11 as needed, based on the Enterprise Mode site list. For more info about IE11 and Enterprise Mode, see Enterprise Mode for Internet Explorer 11 (IE11).

Mt270205.wedge(en-us,TechNet.10).gifTo turn on Enterprise Mode using Group Policy

  1. Open your Group Policy editor and go to the Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Internet Explorer\Use the Enterprise Mode IE website list setting.

Turning this setting on also requires you to create and store a site list.

Local Group Policy Editor for using a site list

  2. Click Enabled, and then in the Options area, type the location to your site list.

  3. Refresh your policy in your organization and then view the affected sites in Microsoft Edge.

The site shows a message in Microsoft Edge, saying that the page needs Internet Explorer. At the same time, the page opens in IE11; in a new frame if it's not yet running, or in a new tab if it is.

Mt270205.wedge(en-us,TechNet.10).gifTo turn on Enterprise Mode using the registry

  1. To turn on Enterprise Mode for only the local user: Open a registry editor, like regedit.exe and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\EnterpriseMode.

    -or-

To turn on Enterprise Mode for all users on the PC: Open a registry editor, like regedit.exe and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\EnterpriseMode.

  2. Edit the SiteList registry key to point to where you want to keep your Enterprise Mode site list file. For example:

Enterprise Mode with site list in the Registry

    • HTTP location: “SiteList”=”http://localhost:8080/sites.xml”

    • Local network: "SiteList"="\\network\shares\sites.xml"

    • Local file: "SiteList"="file:///c:\\Users\\<user>\\Documents\\testList.xml"

All of your managed devices must have access to this location if you want them to be able to access and use Enterprise Mode and your site list.

  3. Refresh your policy in your organization and then view the affected sites in Microsoft Edge.

The site shows a message in Microsoft Edge, saying that the page needs IE. At the same time, the page opens in IE11; in a new frame if it's not yet running, or in a new tab if it is.

Fix your intranet sites

You can add the Send all intranet traffic over to Internet Explorer Group Policy setting for Windows 10 so that all of your intranet sites open in IE11. This means that even if your employees are using Microsoft Edge, they will automatically switch to IE11 while viewing the intranet.

Mt270205.wedge(en-us,TechNet.10).gifTo turn on Send all intranet traffic over to Internet Explorer using Group Policy

  1. Open your Group Policy editor and go to the Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Internet Explorer\Send all intranet traffic over to Internet Explorer setting.

Local Group Policy editor with setting to send all intranet traffic to IE11

  2. Click Enabled.

  3. Refresh your policy in your organization and then view the affected sites in Microsoft Edge.

The site shows a message in Microsoft Edge, saying that the page needs IE. At the same time, the page opens in IE11; in a new frame if it's not yet running, or in a new tab if it is.

DirSync \ FIM used to use the Immutable ID value in the Azure connector space, making it somewhat straightforward to search for objects in the Azure CS using the ImmutableID (either copied from MSOL powershell or from the onprem AD ObjectGUID value converted to a Base64 string), however in AAD Sync and AAD Connect the DN format has changed so it's much more difficult to search for objects.

AAD Sync \ Connect convert the ImmutableID to UTF8Hex and then prepend a CN={ and append a } to make the value more DN-like.

Here's a script I wrote to convert either the new DN format back to the ImmutableID, or the ImmutableID to the new DN format to make searching easier.   Just call the command with one value or the other and it'll supply the other.

Weekend Scripter: Exploring Windows PowerShell 5.0

Summary: Teresa Wilson, Powershell MVP, talks about exploring Windows PowerShell 5.0 on Windows 10.

Teresa Wilson, AKA the Scripting Wife, is here. The Microsoft Scripting Guy, Ed Wilson, is still missing in action. He downloaded Windows 10, and I haven’t seen him since. So I thought I would write about getting Windows PowerShell 5.0 running on Windows 10.

The first thing I need to do is find Windows PowerShell 5.0. I type PowerShell in the Web and Windows search box on my task bar. Cortana comes up and locates the Windows PowerShell 5.0 executable. I click the top of the list for the Desktop app, and Windows PowerShell opens. It opens with the working directory in my profile, but with a shortened version of my logon name. It says Users\Scrip as my directory. Cool enough. Here is the menu from Cortana:

Image of menu

I know I need to update Help. I type Update-Help –module * -Force. The Windows PowerShell progress hums along and it appears to work. Suddenly I am looking at the following long list of error messages:

Image of messages

It is a lot of red, but about half way down, it provides the reason why. I need to run Windows PowerShell as an Administrator, and then try the command again. Once again Cortana and I meet.

This time, I right-click Windows PowerShell, select Run as Administrator, and try the command again. This time, there is only an error message about one of the modules that does not have updatable Help. Cool, it worked.

I again close the Windows PowerShell Admin console. This time when I type PowerShell, I right-click PowerShell and select Pin to Start. I again right-click PowerShell and select Pin to Taskbar. This is shown here:

Image of menu

Sweet. Now I don’t have to mess around searching for a program that I know I will use all the time.

I want to see what I have in Windows PowerShell 5.0. I use the Get-Command cmdlet (gcm is an alias), and I count the number of cmdlets that return. I then decide to group the commands by version of the module. This is shown here:

Image of command output

There are 1285 cmdlets, and of these, 20 are in a module with the version of 3.3.5, and 191 of them are in a module version 3.1.0.0. Now I decide to sort them by the number of cmdlets in each module. To do this, I keep building my command. I get all of the commands from all modules and then sort by module. I then group by module and sort the results by the number of commands in each module. I do a descending sort. I then send the format to Format-Table and choose the name and count. Here is my command:

gcm -Module * | sort Module | group module | sort count -Descending | ft name, count

The command and output from the command are shown here:

Image of command output

I continue to look at modules by looking at the cmdlets in each module. Here is an example of such a command:

gcm -Module PKI

I will let you go play. Time to see where that script monkey wandered off to. Hope you have a great weekend.

~Teresa

TechNet Wiki Platform Update 1: The Wiki is changing!!!

$

In a few weeks, the current plan is for the Wiki platform to change.

You could probably tell that it takes a few clicks to get a new article created or an edit made. The platform has been difficult to maintain.

Our TechNet team is updating the platform! We should see many performance improvements.

We'll also see a few new features. But we won't have feature parity in a few areas. That might mean a few missing things (like leaderboards, code formatting editor, or a few feeds) or the system might not work quite as efficiently (like the History tab). But we're working to get that parity in place.

We think these will be minor hiccups and worth all the performance improvements. It's a necessary transition, as the current platform can't be maintained and updated properly (thus the performance issues), and we need to be able to fix bugs, add features, and more easily update featured articles.

We'll update you with progress here and offer transparency into what parity we're missing, what parity gets added back in, what performance issues are fixed, and what new features get lit up.

Thank you for your help and your patience!

Focus school: Baradene College, New Zealand

$

Today we are excited to place the spotlight on Baradene College and the wonderful work the school is doing in incorporating technology into the classroom. Baradene is one of New Zealand's leading schools in its level of technology adoption and integration, and it is having a visible impact on the school's students and teachers.

Baradene College of the Sacred Heart is a Catholic girls' school in Auckland, New Zealand. The school teaches students from Year 7 to Year 13, with a school roll of 1,150 girls. Deputy Principle, Theresa Bosch, is spearheading the school's move into the digital age. Baradene is reinventing their approach to teaching, using Microsoft technologies as the platform.

Baradene College has set up Office 365 accounts for each student under its licensing agreement. This enables all students to download a free copy of Office - including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote - onto their primary device for schoolwork, and on up to four other supporting devices. Theresa Bosch believes that Office Mix and the OneNote Notebook Creator "are proving to be very popular platforms for Baradene staff and students alike".

To ensure that no student gets left behind in their digital literacy, Year 7 and 8 students at Baradene receive training on the Office programs, with the intention being that by the time students enter Year 9 they will have passed Word, PowerPoint, OneNote and Excel exams and be proficient users.

Baradene College is now in its third year of a student one-to-one BYOD device program. The program was first trialled on Year 9 students, and has since been extended to include all students from Year 7 - 11. The BYOD program has proved to be successful across all year levels. Theresa Bosch says, "we have learnt valuable lessons along the way and believe the use of a personal device has become an important part of the toolkit that supports students learning".

Based on this success, Baradene will continue to ask Year 7 students joining the school to bring a specific device for classroom use. The school has seen many advantages from its BYOD program so far. According to Theresa, "a student owned internet capable device gives them instant access to unlimited online resources and enables them to support, extend, communicate and share their learning in a way that will prepare them for the future".

Theresa has listed the below benefits that the school has seen from their current BYOD program:

  • Anytime, anywhere access to class resources, support and extension activities through Ultranet, the school's learning management system, and Office 365 sites
  • The ability to develop “digital” folders and exercise books for their classes (that can’t be lost, and never need replacing) through OneDrive in Office 365
  • Unlimited access to the school library e-books, database and catalogued web resources through Oliver
  • Greater ability to communicate with teachers, parents and peers to support their learning through instant access to their student email that is set up for them through Student Advantage
  • The ability to draft, redraft and publish their work at the click of a button with Office Products online or from the Student Advantage Office Products that are downloaded onto their devices,
  • Access to world recognised qualifications via the Microsoft IT academy program
  • Allowing students to become active partners in their learning as they acquire 21st Century learning skills.

Baradene's recommended BYOD device is the Microsoft Surface Pro 3, which is a premium Ultrabook/tablet hybrid. This device has proved to support students' learning, and it has "a long battery life, and is light enough for the students to carry around to their various subjects". With its unique click-on keyboard connector and an integrated kickstand, the Surface Pro 3 is adaptable and versatile. Students can use the Surface Pro 3 in the way that best suits them - as a laptop, tablet, or digital writing paper with its high-tech pen technology. Theresa believes that the use of the digital pen is becoming increasingly important, especially when teaching non-linguistic subjects such as Music, Mathematics and Science and character-based languages such as Japanese and Mandarin. Devices with digital pen capability are becoming especially crucial as it becomes increasingly likely that curriculums will move to digital assessment.

OneNote is the primary learning tool used by teachers and students at Baradene. The effectiveness of OneNote as an education tool is maximised using the touch and pen inputs available on the Surface Pro 3. Using OneNote, staff can mark the students' work with their digital pens and provide instant feedback to students, which proves invaluable to staff and students alike.

Theresa Bosch says, the "OneNote Notebook Creator with the Welcome section, Collaboration space, Contents library and notebook for each students has revolutionised the way we deliver the curriculum." Theresa described how the teachers at Baradene typically use their OneNote Class Notebook:

  • "In the Welcome page we generally add an introductory page and includes our Achievement standards so that students can access this at any time."
  • "The contents library is just that – a space to add all the resources.  The students copy these resources to their own space and then complete the work as required."
  • The Collaboration space has proven to be by far the most useful space for us.  Teachers add class list with columns where students add emoji to indicate if they understand the work.  This way a teacher can see at a glance if the class feel comfortable with the content. Collaboration is such a useful learning tool and the possibilities are endless."

OneNote as a learning tool is enabling staff and students to be more productive, collaborate and communicate more efficiently, and be more effective in the learning process. As Theresa says, "the more staff use OneNote Notebook Creator, the more we see the amazing work that is taking place.  Each faculty has a different need and the ease of these Notebooks makes the process for staff seamless".

Whilst OneNote is great in the classroom, it also makes the job of teachers a lot simpler and easier too! Baradene found this when they moved their staff handbook to OneNote a few years ago. Previously, the printed staff handbook had proved to be a major frustration because it was out of date almost immediately. After moving the handbook to the Staff OneNote the teachers at Baradene can be confident that the information they have is the most up to date, and it can be accessed anytime, anywhere on a device that connects to the internet.

So where does Theresa Bosch see Baradene going with technology in the classroom in the next year? She says, "we still have some staff that are apprehensive using the devices but as their confidence grows and as the students know more the uptake will keep increasing.  Our Y7 and 8 program includes training though the Microsoft IT academy.  The knowledge they gain in this course will move throughout the school and their confidence will remove any barriers for using devices to enhance their learning. We are taking all possible steps to remove any barriers for staff and students and as soon as our broadband is increase though Network for Learning (N4L) there will not be anything holding us back. These are indeed exciting times."

For more information on Baradene College's technology story check out Our Flipped Learning Story put together by Sharon Kan, a Teacher of Mathematics & Statistics as well as Digital Literacy at Baradene College.

We look forward to watching Baradene's progress as the school continues to integrate technology into its classrooms. It is exciting to see a school move forward at such a rapid pace and make the most of the tools and technologies available!
