HI everyone,

I was fortunate enough to attend the Ignite conference last week in Chicago it was a good time, lots of good news we're coming out with. I highly recommend watching the Bill Baer sessions on SharePoint 2016 on Channel9 that I have listed at the end of this post. I also attended a YamJam about 2016, I have provided a bulleted list of most news related to SharePoint 2016 on-premises:

  • Patching more details to follow soon but 0 downtime because we removed dependencies between Front end and Back End components
  • InfoPath Designer will not be shipped with 2016 but we will bring forward InfoPath forms Services to SharePoint 2016 and support InfoPath 2013 client.
  • SharePoint Designer will not be shipped with 2016, SharePoint Designer 2013 can still be used with SharePoint 2016
  • When installing Office 2016 it will remove:
  • InfoPath Designer 2013
  • SharePOint Designer 2013
  • Project 2013

Note: You will have to reinstall via your original media if you need it

  • Actively working to address the 5000 List View Threshold, more details soon on new increased threshold
  • MaxFile size increased to 10GB, removed character restrictions. This will be achieved natively within SharePoint 2016 no need for a native and/or 3rd party RBS provider
  • 2x increase in Search scale to 500 million items
  • 100,000 site collections per content database
  • Content Database sizing into the TBs
  • We will continue investing in broader availability of endpoints to support search scenarios, particularly connectors. We are also going to ship new APIs to support surfacing external sources in Delve
  • There will be updates to existing PowerShell cmdlets and new cmdlets specific to SharePoint 2016
  • Removed integrated FIM implementation and will now support uni-directional sync via AD sync in addition to external MIM for bi-directional sync scenarios
  • No plans to deprecate any of the capabilities as they exist in SharePoint 2013 for SharePoint 2016
  • Workflow Manager and Workflow foundation will be brought forward from SharePoint 2013 and we are actively investigating new modern workflow scenarios
  • Working on a new analytics solution that provides a more rich experience when compared to previous Web Analytics experiences
  • SAML claims-based authentication is the preferred authentication method but Windows classic authentication (i.e. NTLM/Kerberos) will remain supported and available through the UX
  • AppFabric remains supported with SharePoint 2016 thru its lifecycle, this is specific to the standalone AppFabric scenarios.
  • SharePoint on-premises will continue to ship on a 2-3 year cadence whereas we update SharePoint Online monthly, the objective being that we will define on-premises through the cloud.

MVA Course

Bob Tabor (an MVP who I recently learned a lot of C# from) has created a multi-module course for Microsoft Virtual Academy entitled Microsoft Azure Fundamentals: Virtual Machines.  This is definitely worth a look, as the number of modules (35) and depth of topics really look to be more quality and in-depth than the title implies.

The course is made up of “Understanding…” modules, “How do I…” modules, and “Tours of…” the various App Services and Data Services available in Microsoft Azure.

Just last week, I had the privilege of presenting at Microsoft Ignite 2015. The topic of my presentation was how to deploy and configure Exchange 2013 using DSC. Specifically, I talked about how to perform the Exchange specific phases of an end to end Exchange deployment, including automating Jetstress, installing Exchange, and performing server, DAG, database, and mount point configuration. I also talked about some lessons learned while using DSC to deploy and configure Exchange in a large scale environment for one of my customers.

If you are interested in checking out this presentation, the recording and slide deck is available here:

SharePoint and Project Server 2013 May 2015 Updates are in Windows Update

I’ve updated my earlier blog post – but just to reach those that only get the original via RSS feed – the 2013 updates for SharePoint and Project Server 2013 are pushed via Windows Update this month.  This was a conscious decision as this month we have fixed the issue where the updates do not recognize the original SP1 release – which works perfectly well in a slipstreamed installation so is a valid baseline for the May updates.  This fix was deemed critical hence it is out via the Windows Update as well as available via the download  center.  Don’t forget to run the configuration wizard if you do install the update – or remember to uncheck if you’d rather not load these updates until you are ready.

Service Manager portable module for SMA/Azure Automation

$

0

If you're using SMA, you've probably noticed there are many modules imported for you out-of-the-box. Among others, this includes modules for some of the System Center components: Configuration Manager, Data Protection Manager, Operations Manager, Virtual Machine Manager & SPF.

However, in SMA, there is no module for Service Manager by default. This isn't a big deal, as your PowerShell workflows can still run Service Manager cmdlets, as long as you install the Service Manager console (which includes the PowerShell module) on the Runbook Worker.

The benefit of having the PowerShell module imported into SMA or Azure Automation as an asset is simple – the Service Manager cmdlets are shown alongside all of the other activities in the UI. The module is used only to make the authoring experience easier, giving benefits such as storing a Service Manager credential as an asset in SMA or Azure Automation.

One thing to note – this is NOT the whole Service Manager PowerShell module, but the portable module. This basically means that we define what cmdlets are available in the module & store credentials, but don't actually copy any of the resources over. Remember, this is just used to show the activities in the authoring experience. There's more information about Portable Modules at http://blogs.technet.com/b/orchestrator/archive/2013/11/04/service-management-automation-portable-modules-what-why-and-how.aspx.

I created the portable module, using the New-SmaPortableModule command, which is part of the SMA PowerShell module. I've attached it to this blog post, so you can simply import it, rather than having to roll your own. This was created in a Service Manager 2012 R2 UR5 environment.

Importing the Module in SMA

To import the Service Manager Module via the Azure Pack site, go to Automation > Assets > Import Module. You can simply upload the .zip file attached to this blog.

Importing the Module in Azure Automation

From the Azure Automation blade, you can go to Assets > Modules > Add a Module. Upload the zip file attached to this blog.

The module takes several minutes to be extracted and imported. After a few minutes, you'll see the Service Manager activities available to use in your Runbooks.

UNTERSCHIEDLICHE EINSTELLUNGEN ZWISCHEN PRINTSERVER UND VERBUNDENE CLIENTS

$

Hi Folks,

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\Connections\"Servername,Printername"\Devmodes2

==================================================================================

[Das Verhalten: By Design]

Wieso???

===================================================================================

[Workarounds]

Reg Delete HKCU\Printers\DevModes2 /v "\\printserver\printer" /f

Reg Delete HKCU\Printers\DevModePerUser /v "\\printserver\printer" /f

Hi folks,

Today I want to present the following scenario and possible workarounds for this situation:

[Scenario EN]

Your company is managing one or several print server with different print queues. All devices are set to print black&white by default.

End user connect to the printer queues and on the basis of the document they want to print, they either select black&white or color.

End users can properly change and save printer settings in their User Profile without any restrictions. Since users often set the printer settings on color and not go back to black and white, this can lead to high color toner consumption which perhaps can lead to loss of money to the company.

If a user has connected a printer and changed the settings, these changes are permanently stored in the user profile under:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\Connections\"Servername,Printername"\DevmodePerUser

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\Connections\"Servername,Printername"\Devmodes2

Wanted would be that with each new login, the printer settings as defined on the print server remain the defaults also on the client – without any user interaction; or, the user should not be at all able to change the main settings.

==================================================================================

[The Behavior: By Design]

But why??? Microsoft cannot deny a user to access the printer preferences. Each End user is allowed to print every document in the way he desires.

===================================================================================

[Workarounds]

1.            Delete and reconnect the Network Printer during each logon and delete the Per-User Devmode before.

Create a Logoff Script which deletes the Devmodes:

Reg Delete HKCU\Printers\DevModes2 /v "\\printserver\printer" /f

Reg Delete HKCU\Printers\DevModePerUser /v "\\printserver\printer" /f

2.            Have 2 Printer Queues (1 black&white, 1 Color) and change the Print Driver that it only can print black&white for the first Case.

Important configuration changes for IIS log collection in Operations Management Suite

$
0
0

Are you using IIS Log Collection for Operational Insights (now a part of Operations Management Suite)? If so, please read on.  This change will affect your Operations Management Suite (OMS) workspace.

On Wednesday, June 3rd  we will be pushing down new Operations Manager rules that will change how your IIS logs are sent to OMS.

Currently we push all IIS logs through your management servers before being sent to OMS.  We’ve found that in some cases this was putting too much load on the management servers.  In order to fix this, we’re going to be routing these logs from the agents straight to OMS– bypassing the management servers completely.

We use the same configuration for the collection of security events for the Security and Audit solution.  If you are already using this solution, you are likely already prepared for this change.

In order to configure your agents to handle this change, here’s what you’ll need to do:

From the Operations Manager console, in the ADMINISTRATION pane, click on Operational Insights connection.

Click on Configure Proxy Server and input your proxy address.  This will be used by both the management server and the agents.

If your proxy requires authentication, you will need to set up a “Run As” account

If you have firewall rules on the agents you will also need to update these firewall rules to allow the following urls:

    • *.ods.opinsights.azure.com – Port 443
    • *.blob.core.windows.net -- Port 443

NOTES:

  • If you’ve already configured Operational Insights to use a proxy and your agents have permission to use that proxy, you are already set up for these changes
  • If your agents are configured to with outbound internet access, no action is require
  • Both agent and management server need to be update to SCOM 2012 R2 UR3 or 2012 SP1 UR7 or higher

Announcing Application Insights Public Preview (  http://azure.microsoft.com/blog/2015/04/29/announcing-application-insights-public-preview-2/ )

360 Overview

Application Insights ?

Ray Escamilla

Application Insights

Kyle McClellan

Pierre Tetreault
