I’m sure a lot of you, like me, are paying close attention to the world’s premier soccer tournament, especially as Team USA plays Belgium Tuesday. The Windows Phone Blog’s Brandon LeBlanc shows a screen grab of Cortana (available with Windows Phone 8.1 and powered by Bing) being asked which team would win, and she picked Belgium.

A few weeks ago, Bing announced it was offering predictions for the outcomes of sporting events – such as the one the world is watching in Brazil.

Give it a try and see if Cortana guesses right and read more about her prediction skills on the Windows Phone Blog.

Learn how Windows Azure Pack brings the benefit of the cloud to your data center

Enterprises today desire the flexibility and affordability that cloud environments offer, while service providers want the ability to support more enterprise customers. Windows Azure Pack (WAP) builds on the power of Windows Server and System Center to deliver an enterprise-class, cost-effective solution for self-service, multi-tenant cloud infrastructure and application services that run in your data center on your hardware, giving you the benefit of the cloud, with the customization and control you desire.

WAP brings Microsoft Azure technologies to the data center, addressing a number of key requirements for those who want to embrace the service provider model for delivering IT services. Microsoft Azure and WAP tie into the Microsoft vision for the Cloud OS, a hybrid cloud solution that helps enterprises transform their current infrastructure to deliver agility and cost effectiveness. With the Cloud OS, companies can quickly and flexibly build and manage modern applications across platforms, locations, and devices, unlock insights from volumes of existing and new data, and support user productivity wherever they are and on whatever device they choose.

This free course, “Windows Azure Pack: Infrastructure as a Service” Jump Start, on July 16 and 17, focuses on WAP’s IaaS, including self-service and automation of virtual machine roles, virtual networking, clouds, and SQL Server, along with System Center and third-party integration.

OneNote, Wait I can do what with OneNote?

$
0
0

 I often get asked what my favorite Microsoft products are. I happily respond with expected Office 365, Microsoft Azure, and Xbox One. The product that always surprises my customers the most is that I list OneNote near the top of that list. In the last few years more government customers are becoming truly aware to the power of OneNote. However, there are still far too many government customers who know OneNote as that "app I that's part of the Office install." OneNote is the digital note-taking app for your devices. Where you can capture thoughts, ideas, to-dos, and everything else in one place. You can use OneNote anywhere and share your notes with anyone. This blog post isn't going to be focused on "Getting Started with Microsoft OneNote" or "OneNote Tricks to make you an Instant expert" or even how the Cincinnati Country Day School is using OneNote and the Surface Pro 3 to change the dynamic of technology in education.

No, this post is about the extensibility of OneNote. It's also about the ability to incorporate mobility into daily process. In fact some of OneNote's best capabilities are enabled through the ability to leverage so many great integration points built by customers and partners alike. Like many products in the Office and Office 365 family there is an API to allow for integration points. For Government customers this can be a critical differentiator when evaluating technology. In my many years as both a Government customer and a technologist selling to Government customers I can tell you one incontrovertible fact. The more a piece of technology is capable of doing, the more it can evolve, integrate and grow with a customer, the easier it is to gain buy in to use the technology. One of the most pervasive demonstrations of how extensible the API is for OneNote is the ability to scan directly into OneNote.

The ability to scan is often critical for most Government organizations. While many strive for a paper free office, it is often not always quickly achievable without the ability to find true integration into the technologies used every day. One of the great partners Microsoft has in this space is Brother Technologies. Brother is one of several companies who have developed "Scan To" applications for Microsoft products like OneNote and OneDrive. The ability to quickly turn paper into an electronic file and turn around and be able to leverage that in creative ways starts to make Office modernization a reality. To that end I have asked Steve Feldstein Director of Laser and Scanner Products at Brother International, to add a few thoughts to this post about how Brother has approached finding new ways to extend your investment into Microsoft technologies like OneNote.

 Brother International Corporation recently updated their ADS-1500W and ADS-2500W wireless-enabled scanners to support direct scanning to OneNote, and released their first color laser all-in-ones to support direct scanning to OneNote, the MFC-L8600DW, MFC-L8850CDW, and MFC-L9550CDW. Using these devices to scan directly to OneNote can help virtually everyone in your office convert paper documents into electronic files and make them available for online sharing and collaboration. Once scanned into OneNote, files can be organized in notebooks and conveniently accessed by authorized users through Windows, Windows Phone devices, iOS devices (iPhone and iPad), Android devices, and through a browser with OneNote Online.

 Scanning documents into OneNote is an ideal way to share information between multiple branches of the same office, a mobile sales team or other professionals deployed in the field – even members of a global workforce! OneNote enables genuine collaboration by giving multiple users the ability to modify and edit documents with their notes, thoughts, pictures, tables and more. Used in conjunction with these Brother Scanners and All-in-Ones, OneNote can create an open, collaborative working environment where hardcopy documents are transformed into digital files where ideas are exchanged freely, and not limited by location, time differences, or operating systems.

In addition to direct-to-OneNote scanning, these Brother Scanners and All-in-Ones offer the flexibility of wireless networking, cloud connectivity, and an intuitive color touchscreen display. Both the ADS-1500W and ADS-2500W can also scan directly to OneDrive and SharePoint, making it an ideal compact scanner for businesses that use the Microsoft portfolio.

–Steve Feldstein

   (Please visit the site to view this video)

As I mentioned Brother is one of the many companies who have developed solutions to integrate into OneNote. What I think is truly pervasive is that companies like Brother have incorporated the shift towards a more mobile world into how they integrate into technologies like OneNote. You saw in the video that devices like the Brother ADS-1500W, and its slightly larger cousin, the ADS-2500W, scanner did not even need to be connected to a PC. The possibilities to leverage the more mobile Government workforce grow exponentially when you can start to cut cables and complex setup. In the future we will offer some addition context around the challenge of moving away from a paper driven workforce in your move to the cloud. Products like OneDrive for Business and SharePoint online offer powerful document management and storage capabilities and we will dive deeper on how Government organizations can take their documents, paper or electronic, and add the retention and compliance capabilities they need in a rapidly available way.

“We all knew what the problems were, but the real issue was, things were getting worse and worse. How were we going to get ahead of this?  That’s what we really had to go fix.” – Steve Lipner, Partner Director of Program Management at Microsoft.

When researchers at a small firm called eEye Digital Security noticed a nasty self-replicating code known today as “Code Red,” little did they know that this worm named after a flavor of Mountain Dew, would also kick off the tech industry’s best security model.  Its stories like this one, captured in the new in depth magazine “Life in the Digital Crosshairs; the dawn of the Microsoft Security Development Lifecycle,” that chronicles how the Microsoft Security Development Lifecycle (SDL) has been helping public and private organizations for the past 10 years, change their engineering cultures and develop more secure software.

“Our Secure Product Lifecycle is analogous to Microsoft’s Security Development Lifecycle,” says Brad Arkin, chief security officer at Adobe.  “We value this process and the information it helps protect.” read more

@IrishOberon of The Iron Druid Chronicles

oberon_400x400

I mentioned in my June reading list that @kevinhearne’s The Iron Druid Chronicles is my #1 favorite urban fantasy series – a series which features my favorite character, Oberon, who describes himself thusly: “I am the best friend of Atticus O'Sullivan. Meet me on the Mongolian steppes and we will ride to glory! Also, I like sausage and bitches. “

I loved the series from the first book and all of the main characters, but Atticus’ wolf hound, Oberon, is so memorable that in the latest book, Shattered (Iron Druid #7), I found myself looking forward to the next scene in which we would appear.

Let me give you a few examples that illustrate why Oberon is my favorite character.

First, he has a particular world view and is both enthusiastic and authentic.  He has his own voice.  Here is a good example from Tricked (Iron Druid #4):

“Hey, Oberon,” I called, filling up the tub for him, “it’s time for your bath!”
<It is?> He sounded doubtful. <Do you have a decent story?> Oberon wouldn’t sit still for baths unless I told him a story—a real story about historical figures. He never settled for faerie tales.
“I’m going to tell you the true story of a man named Francis Bacon.”
<BACON?> He came running so fast that he couldn’t negotiate the sharp turn into the bathroom very well, and he slammed into the door awkwardly and then splashed into the tub, soaking me after I’d just finished drying off.
<Oh, this is going to be great! I can tell I’m going to like this man already. He had to have been a genius with a name like that. Was he a genius?>
“Yes, he was.”
<I knew it! I have an instinct for that kind of thing. But I hope this story doesn’t end with him chopped into bits and sprinkled on a salad. That would be tragic, and a story about bacon should be uplifting.>

And of course Oberon has come clear opinions about squirrels, as demonstrated in Trapped (Iron Druid #5):

How did you ever think to look for this? I asked Oberon.
<I didn’t think of it, to be honest. Finding it was a happy accident. You see, there was a squirrel on that pine tree, giving me some lip as I was passing down by the stream. He said some bawdy things about my mom—>
Oberon, come on.
<Well, all right, I don’t know what he said, but he definitely had an attitude, just like all squirrels, and he deserved to be chased up to the top and kept there for a while. I wouldn’t have come up here otherwise.>
Well, this is perfect. We owe that squirrel for leading you here.
<Wait a second! How come the squirrel gets all the credit?>
I was thinking he’d get all the credit and you’d get all the sausage.
<Oh! That sounds completely fair, Atticus; I really can’t argue with that.>

And finally, since I don’t want to spoil any major plot elements of the latest book, let me share this small bit of conversation about India:

<What’s it like in India?>
“Oh, that’s right, you’ve never been there at all. Well, brace yourself, buddy. More than a billion people live there, and the majority of them are vegetarians.”
<Ha-ha, very funny.>
“I’m serious, Oberon. Cows are sacred. Nobody eats them.”
<Are you trying to scare me?>
I grinned at him. “Sounds like a harrowing adventure, doesn’t it? Come on, Oberon. Paws on the tree.”
<Wait, Atticus, I think we should talk about this—>

Let me share some other key links related to this series and the author, Kevin Hearne, who is very involved with his fans and social media.

Also, a few of The Iron Druid characters engage directly on twitter as well:

  • @IrishOberon– I am the best friend of Atticus O'Sullivan. Meet me on the Mongolian steppes and we will ride to glory! Also, I like sausage and bitches.
  • @IronDruid– Tea maker. Druid. I am not Kevin Hearne; we are not one and the same. I'm just the guy he gets his stories from.
  • @ArchdruidOwen– A man out of his time. Trying not to get killed by Siodhachan and his fecking hound. Me story is in the Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne.

So if you haven't already discovered this awesome series, I wholeheartedly recommend you get Hounded (Iron Druid #1) and start it today!

A step-by-step guide to configuring NOIDMIF for Hardware Inventory in Configuration Manager 2012

$

~ Rafid Ali

GearsHello Everyone, Rafid Ali here with a Configuration Manager support tip for you. I recently worked an interesting case where we had to configure Hardware Inventory using NOIDMIF files, and although writing customizations for customers is not something we’re able to do here in product support, we can help teach you how to do this on your own. Because of this I thought it would be a good idea to pass along some tips in the form of a step-by-step guide for the configuration of NOIDMIF for Hardware Inventory in System Center 2012 Configuration Manager.

This article is divided into four major steps:

Step 1: Introduction of NOIDMIF and IDMIF files, including the MOF and the component engaged to process it
Step 2: Server Side Configuration
Step 3: Client Side Configuration
Step 4: Processing the Hardware Inventory with NOIDMIF data

Step 1: Introduction of NOIDMIF and IDMIF files

1. The NOIDMIF and IDMIF files

NOIDMIF files can be used to add information to a client hardware inventory that is associated with a particular client device but cannot normally be collected by Configuration Manager. For example, many companies label each computer in the organization with an asset number and then catalogue them by hand. NOIDMIF inventory is automatically associated with the client device that it was collected from if you configure the Hardware Inventory in the client settings to collect NOIDMIFs. To do this you need to individually create a NOIDMIF file for each machine, and this information can be added to the Configuration Manager database while processing the Hardware Inventory and thus can be used for queries and reporting.

For information about creating NOIDMIF files see the System Center 2012 Configuration Manager SDK documentation at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh948960.aspx.

IDMIF files are simply custom MIF files. IDMIF files contain a unique ID and are not associated with the computer they are collected from. IDMIF files can also be used to collect inventory data about devices that are not Configuration Manager clients. For example, we can use this collect information about a shared network printer, DVD player, photocopier or similar equipment that is not associated with a client-specific computer.

IDMIF files are identical to NOIDMIF files with these exceptions:

• IDMIF files must have a delta header that provides architecture and a unique ID. NOIDMIF files are automatically given a similar header by the system during processing on the client.

• IDMIF files must include a top-level group with the same class as the architecture being added or changed, and that group must include at least one property.

• Like NOIDMIF files, IDMIF files have key properties that must be unique. Any class that has more than one instance must have at least one key property defined, or subsequent instances overwrite previous instances.

• Removing IDMIF files from clients does not cause the associated data in the site database to be deleted during subsequent hardware inventories.

• IDMIF file information is not added to client inventory reports and the files themselves are sent across the network to be processed at the site server.

2. The MOF file
Managed Object Format (MOF) files can be used to import or extended hardware inventory classes that need to be inventoried from a Configuration Manager client computer.

3. MP_Hinv
MP_Hinv
is a Management Point component that receives theinventory sent by client machines in XML format. It processes the XML file and converts it into a MIF file.

4. SMS_INVENTORY_DATA_LOADER
SMS_INVENTORY_DATA_LOADER processes the MIF file received from MP_Hinv and stores the inventory information sent by client machines in the ConfigMgr database by executing SQL stored procedures in the background.

Step 2: Server Side Configuration

First we will create the MOF and MIF Files according to a requirement specified in our example for this scenario.

We will pull the following information using NOIDMIF files from a SCCM client machine.

Department_Name
Department_Code
User_Full_Name
User_Title

The MOF for creating a Class and its Attribute is as follows:

[ SMS_Report (TRUE),
SMS_Group_Name ("Department_Information"),
SMS_Class_ID ("Department_Name")]
class Department_InformationInventory : SMS_Class_Template
{
[SMS_Report (TRUE),key ] string Department_Name;
[SMS_Report (TRUE) ] string Department_Code;
[SMS_Report (TRUE) ] string Users_Title;
[SMS_Report (TRUE) ] string User_Full_Name;
};

To create the MOF file, simply copy the lines above in red into Notepad and save the file with the extension .MOF

“Department_Information” is the Group name which you will see in the Resource explorer under Hardware.
“Department_Name”
is the name of the Class.
“Highlighted” portion are Attributes whose values will be fetched up by processing the Hardware Inventory.

NOTE You can create more attributes as per your specific requirements.

Once the file is saved with a .MOF extension we need to import it. To do this, go to the console and open Client Settings, browse to Hardware Inventory and click on “Set Classes”

image

Then click on “Import”

image

Browse to the location where you have saved the .MOFfile and click Open

image

Select the option “Import both Hardware Inventory Classes and Hardware Inventory Class Settings”

image

Once the Hardware Inventory class is imported, verify that the class is added by searching for it using its class name. By default it’s already selected but if not then select the Class. You can expand the Class to look into its Attributes as well.

clip_image010

After importing the MOF, be sure you enable the collection of NOIDMIF files as shown below.

clip_image012

Now you can verify that new tables are created regarding the above class “Department_Name” in the database.

clip_image014clip_image016

At this point the configuration on the server side is completed so we will now move to the client side.

Step 3: Client Side Configuration

On the client side we need to create a MIF file and copy it to the required location. To do this, type the following lines into Notepad. This will create the NOIDMIF, its Class “Department_Name” and its attributes.

NOTE You need to save this file in .MIF extension.

Start Component
Name = "
System_InformationInventory"
Start Group
Name = "Department_Information"
ID = 1
Class = "Department_Name"
Start Attribute
Name = "Department_Name"
ID = 1
Type = String(250)
Value = "ConfigMgr"
End Attribute
Start Attribute
Name = "Department_Code"
ID = 2
Type = String(80)
Value = "808315"
End Attribute
Start Attribute
Name = "Users_Title"
ID = 3
Type = String(250)
Value = "Admin"
End Attribute
Start Attribute
Name = "User_Full_Name"
ID = 4
Type = String(80)
Value = "Rafid_Ali"
End Attribute
End Group
End Component

The highlighted four attributes above are required as per our example.You can create more attributes to suit your specific requirements, but if you do, make sure the same Class and Attributes are created on the server side as well.

Once the .MIF file is created, copy it to the location: %Windir%\CCM\Inventory\Noidmifs

Now the client side configuration is completed.

Step 4: Processing the Hardware Inventory with NOIDMIF data

1. Run the “Machine Policy Retrieval and Evaluation Cycle” so the new policies regarding the new Hardware Inventory Classes are be received.

2. Run the “Hardware Inventory Cycle” to send the new Inventory with NOIDMIF’s data. InventoryAgent.log will show that four new attributes regarding the Class “Department_Name” need to be collected for hardware Inventory data and that info needs to be sent to server.

The next line will show that “Department_InformationInventory” does not exist, but you can ignore it.

clip_image018

3. Now the XML file from the client computer will be received by MP_Hinv and processed into a MIF file and sent to the SMS_INVENTORY_DATA_LOADER component (dataldr.box) for processing.

MP_Hinv.log:

clip_image020

4. The SMS_INVENTORY_DATA_LOADER component will receive file MIF file, process it, and then insert the data into the corresponding tables in the ConfigMgr database by running SQL stored procedures in the background.

NOTE To view the stored procedures you must enable verbose logging for the SMS_INVENTORY_DATA_LOADER component.

Dataldr.log:

clip_image022

5. In the ConfigMgr console, open Resource Explorer for the client computer and view the Processed NOIDMIF information. You will find a new component named “Department_Information” with its Attributes and their values under HARDWARE

image

NOTE All of the above results and screens shots are from my lab environment setup in a simple ConfigMgr 2012 R2 configuration. It is recommended that you perform these steps in a test environment before implementing in a production environment.

Additional Information

1. NOIDMIF files themselves are not sent to the site server during a client hardware inventory cycle. The information that is contained within the NOIDMIF file is collected and added to the client inventory report.

2. When you create a NOIDMIF file, this must be saved in an ANSI encoded format. NOIDMIF files saved in UTF-8 encoded format cannot be read by Configuration Manager.

3. The Configuration.mof file is used to define the data classes to be inventoried by the hardware inventory client agent. Data classes can be created to inventory existing or custom WMI repository data classes or registry keys present on client systems.

4. The SMS_def.mof file defines the reporting classes used by the hardware inventory client agent to determine whether or not specific client data class information is reported. Reporting classes are based on the WMI repository data classes and attributes of those classes existing on clients by default or added to them by customizing the Configuration.mof file.

Back to the Future with Power Query – Invalid Object name

I got pulled into an interest case this week that brought back some fond memories.  The customer was trying to use Power Query to connect to SQL Server, but was getting errors.  It was indicated that pulling in data via Power Pivot or the Excel Data Tab worked fine. The errors were the following depending on the operation they were trying.

DataSource.Error: Microsoft SQL: Invalid object name 'sys.databases'.
Details:
    Message=Invalid object name 'sys.databases'.
    Number=208
    Class=16

DataSource.Error: Microsoft SQL: Invalid object name 'sys.foreign_key_columns'.
Invalid object name 'sys.foreign_keys'.
Invalid object name 'sys.objects'.
Invalid object name 'sys.schemas'.
Invalid object name 'sys.objects'.
Invalid object name 'sys.schemas'.
Invalid object name 'sys.columns'.
Invalid object name 'sys.columns'.
Details:
    Message=Invalid object name 'sys.foreign_key_columns'.
Invalid object name 'sys.foreign_keys'.
Invalid object name 'sys.objects'.
Invalid object name 'sys.schemas'.
Invalid object name 'sys.objects'.
Invalid object name 'sys.schemas'.
Invalid object name 'sys.columns'.
Invalid object name 'sys.columns'.
    Number=208
    Class=16

Some of you may already know where this is leading.  The issue is that they were trying to use this against a SQL 2000 database.  The objects listed above are referred to as Catalog Views and were introduced in SQL 2005.  So, they didn’t exist in SQL 2000.  Hence the error.

Catalog Views (Transact-SQL)
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms174365.aspx

These occur due to the fact that Power Query will query these views to gather metadata about the objects you are trying to reference.  This could be the listing of databases, the structure of the table (including columns and data types) along with other pieces of data.

Error #1 (sys.databases):

This error popped when we tried to import data from a server and didn’t specify the database.

image

Error #2:

The second error is when we do specify a database.  In my case we had a listing of tables and views in the navigator, but when I hovered over an object, or went to use an object I see the error.

image

So, what do we do?

You have a few options that will work depending on your situation.  First, and probably the most important, is that you should look at upgrading your SQL Server.  SQL 2000 is out of support and should be looked at to move to a more recent version.  I understand that this may not be within your control though, or not even a possibility for your company.  Realize though, that that should be seriously looked at.

There is an option to execute a SQL statement directly with Power Query.  One way is through the UI.

image

image

This results in the following M Statement, if you look at the Advanced Editor.

let
    Source = Sql.Database("basestar\sql2000", "pubs", [Query="select * from employee"])
in
    Source

One of the draw backs you face is that any manipulation you make to the Query will not take advantage of “folding” with the data source.  This is because you are sending a static statement to the Database and Power Query won’t alter that as you intentionally said to execute that statement. Also, the statements are not parsed before sending the query to SQL, so make sure the statement actually runs.  Another caveat is that there is no guarantee as to how often the query will be sent to SQL.

This also works with calling a Stored Procedure as well.

image

let
    Source = Sql.Database("basestar\sql2000", "pubs", [Query="exec reptq1"])
in
    Source

You can always just create a blank query, under the “From Other Sources” drop down and add the M Syntax directly if you wanted.

While the errors were interesting, I think it would be rare for someone to still be using SQL 2000.  However if you run into the error, then hopefully this will help explain why you are hitting it.
