Windows 8.1 makes it easy for several users to share a single Surface. And by signing-in with separate accounts, users can create their own Start Screen, install favorite apps and personalize everything to their own preferences.

This could come in handy for members of a family or for co-workers. Each person can experience the device as his or her own. Individual accounts provide customization with files and apps only available to that user.

To find out how to set up a Surface to share with others, check out the Surface Blog.

MBV 13.870 is available - updated rules, dashboard and sizable UI.

Hello,

sorry for my silence, I recognized I have not updated MBV for a long time.

In fact I update it frequently for our internal usage at Microsoft or for some specific customers scenarios that I meet  during my visits on customer sites, but I did not take the time until now to fix some remaining issues and publish it for public usage.

It is the good time so to publish a new build.

New features:

As for each new version of MBV, this version brings new queries and updated some existing rules to check for latest CUs of BizTalk for example

It provides also now the possibility to compress in a zip the output report and send it automatically by mail if needed (Cf my last post on version 13.662 for more details on this mail notification feature:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/jpierauc/archive/2013/10/28/msgboxviewer-13-662-is-released-and-provides-great-new-features.aspx)

The Dashboard section was also improved with additional information reported and provides now a complete view of all the important information of your BizTalk group.

Finally, the main window of MBV (in its UI version so) can now be resized  to any size you want to adapt to any resolution of your analyzed  server.

You can downbload this latest version here :

http://blogs.technet.com/b/jpierauc/archive/2007/12/18/msgboxviewer.aspx

Feel free to contact me if you meet some issues or have any questions regarding that version or MBV usage in general

‘Angry Birds Go!’ Windows Phone update adds new theme, go-karts and daily rewards

When “Angry Birds Go!” changed up this pig-popping franchise with the franchise’s first 3D world, and added go-karts and a wild downhill race on Piggy Island, we thought we’d seen it all. But now the temperature has plunged and it’s a snowy, slippery, subzero death match for the birds and their porky prey.

Mechanic Pig has built eight new karts to upset the balance of power and use them to master racetracks, stunt roads, air courses and off-road. There are also new telepod toys. Best of all, every day brings unique, time-limited events with increasing rewards.

Install “Angry Birds Go!” from the Windows Phone Store.

Uprading from Windows XP starts paying you back in 18 months

$

Investing in new technology can seem daunting, but when you run the numbers, the payoff is well worth the investment. A recent study reveals small to mid-sized businesses would recoup costs of an upgrade to their operating system in 18 months. When factoring the continued and soaring costs of servicing outdated operating systems, businesses that choose to upgrade can save an average of 90 percent in lost productivity, according to the study. Those are results even companies of all sizes can’t ignore.

End of support or start of return?

With the end of Windows XP support coming on April 8th, the issue is coming to a head as over 40 percent of small and mid-sized businesses currently running XP. Making an upfront investment in technology like Windows 8 can seem like a leap of faith, but as the numbers point out, it’s only logical.

The money pit of older technology

"Small to mid-sized businesses would recoup costs of an upgrade to their operating system in 18 months."

Companies who choose to continue running outdated operating systems might feel like they are actually cost saving because they are not laying out capital. But in actuality, in the fifth year of use, old technology drains $761 a year for IT labor cost and $324 in lost user productivity. Those issues include dealing with patches. Purging malware.  Or even working to keep vital software like QuickBooks functional after it ends support for Windows XP. Those costs won’t go down, and they don’t go away.

Measurable costs like productivity don’t factor in the losses in opportunity. According to recent polls, 90 percent of customers would refuse to do business with organizations using outdated technology. And nearly half of customers won’t do businesses with companies they know to have been hacked. Since upgrading an operating system is a major upgrade in security, it’s an investment in retaining customers. Finally, businesses using older desktop computers turn off over 60 percent of customers from making a purchase. Over time, all the costs business won’t see really add up.

The cost to be the boss

"Old technology drains $761 a year for IT labor cost and $324 in lost user productivity."

The upfront investment in new technology pays off quickly. First, it’s a one-time cost. While older technology continues to drain resources, upgrades start showing returns immediately. Or maybe it’s upgrading your point of sale to include touch devices or mobile payments for a dynamic customer experience. The benefit may just boil down to less glamorous concerns like compatibility for vital tools and compliance with government reporting standards. Whatever the reason, change in this case will be good.

Office Web Apps 2013 & VMWare

We have seen an influx of issues with Office Web Apps 2013 being installed on a Non-System Drive using VMWare.

The issues have mainly been sporadic and we are working to narrow them down.  Below is a prime example (with ULS entry) of the unusual behavior we are seeing:

"Microsoft Word Web App"

Sorry, there was a problem and we can't open this document.  If this happens again, try opening the document in Microsoft Word."

Here is an example of what we are seeing in the ULS logs:

03/14/2014 14:02:40.53 w3wp.exe (UTMSSP01:0x1620) 0x0BB8 SharePoint Foundation General ai1wu Medium System.IO.FileNotFoundException: The system cannot find the file specified. The Resolution is to uninstall Office Web Apps 2013, re-install (on the C: drive), apply updates and rebuild the farm.

At the moment we are trying to isolate a root cause for why exactly this is happening (dynamic attach of disk in VMWare, maybe).  But for now, if you want OWA 2013 to work using VMWare, make sure it is installed on the C: drive.

Contoso Labs-Rack Design - Part 1

Contoso Labs Series - Table of Contents

Now that we have all of our equipment, we need to figure out what our deployment footprint looks like. It’s worth noting that while we’re discussing this like it was a linear process, this is actually one of the many interdependencies we had to manage during the planning process that shaped our purchasing.

Racks of Unusual Size

The first bit of uniqueness we have to deal with is our datacenter. The location where this cloud will be deployed is one of our research and development datacenters. In other words, Microsoft’s public services like Office365, Outlook.com, and Xbox Live! do not live there. That’s not to say it’s not a serious datacenter, however. There are literally tens of thousands of servers running there, all serving the needs of our development and test teams.

One of the unique features of the datacenter is special racks throughout. For density purposes, we had custom 52U racks built for the entire facility.  Needless to say, that makes for some interesting architecture choices when it comes to racking and wiring, if you’re going to make maximum use of the space in each rack.

Click to EnlargeMaximizing density is important despite the datacenter’s huge size, because space is still at a premium.  Luckily for us, our existing compute nodes were deployed as one large chunk several years ago, and consumed 7+ racks of contiguous space. This fortunate twist meant we only needed one additional rack of space for our new gear, along with a well considered re-racking plan.

Rack Pairs

The final rack deployment plan took shape around a rack pair design that would be replicated 4 times.  You can see a representation of our racks to the right, just click to enlarge. One rack will hold only compute nodes and their associated network equipment, while the other rack will hold a smaller quantity of compute nodes, as well one of our Scale-Out File Servers that will provide storage for the rack pair.  Besides helping localize traffic, it gives us flexibility to take a pair of racks and remove them from the fabric to test new ideas, new versions of Windows and System Center, and leave the rest of the fabric unaffected.

In the next post of this series, we’ll dive into the details of the rack layout, and then the logical wiring of the systems and racks.

2 Million Jobs and $357 Billion: Why small business advocates like the Chicagoland Chamber are making SMB technology education a top priority

$

0

On April 3, more than 1,000 entrepreneurs, small business owners and members of the Chicago business community will gather for the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce’s annual Exchange Partnership event.

The event is Chicago’s largest business networking opportunity of the year, and this year it will focus on the role of technology in fostering the success of small businesses, and fueling job creation and economic growth.

New research from the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) found that US SMBs that leverage technology had 10 points higher job growth and 11 points higher revenue growth than “low-tech” SMBs. The research also concluded that if just 15% of low-tech SMBs and 25% of mid-tech SMBs became high-tech SMBs, the result would be the addition of more than 2 million jobs and $357 billion into the US economy.

Tech-forward SMBs experience greater productivity and are able to better compete with much larger players. They employ the full range of available tools, like productivity software and cloud-based services.  By contrast, low-tech SMBs that don’t take advantage of technology’s opportunities, create fewer jobs than their high-tech counterparts.

Event speakers include:

Daymond John, branding expert, star of ABC’s hit business-themed show “Shark Tank” and entrepreneur who grew his fashion brand to deliver $350 million in revenue in a single year.

Theresa E. Mintle, president and CEO of the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, who will highlight key opportunities for Chicago businesses in 2014 and lay out a compelling vision for the economic growth.

Derek Kennedy, Partner at BCG, who will deliver deep insights from the latest research on how technology promotes business growth.

Thomas Hansen, worldwide VP of Microsoft’s SMB Group, who will share perspectives on business growth and the amazing stories of SMBs that are using technology to drive their success.

Pretty darned useful - "Merge-SPLogFile" cmdlet

$

My favorite ULS logging PowerShell command is described here:  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff607721.aspx.  The Merge-SPLOgFile cmdlet pulls trace log entries from all farm computers into a single log file on the local computer and it works in Project Server 2010 and 2013, too.

I can hand this link to customers and they can run the Merge-SPLogFile command from PowerShell.  The result is a single output file they can easily upload for me to review.  The real benefit to this command, as someone who does troubleshooting remotely, is that I get all ULS entries from all the servers combined.  Pretty neat.

Merge-SPLogFile -Path "c:\mergelog\log.txt" -Overwrite -level High -StartTime "03/25/2014 12:00" -EndTime "03/25/2014 12:59"
