Counterfeit medicines are a growing threat to public health across the European Union (EU) and technology is fundamental to addressing this challenge.
Solidsoft, a UK-based software development consultancy has won the 2013 Microsoft Worldwide Cloud Partner of the Year award for its European Medicines Verification System (EMVS). Based on the Windows Azure cloud services development, hosting, and management environment, EMVS helps to prevent the spread of counterfeit medicines.
EMVS was commissioned by the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA) to verify the authenticity of the more than 10 billion medicines dispensed annually across the 27 member states of the EU. The system recognises a unique, encrypted identifier included in every legitimate medicine that will be scanned at the point of dispensing and verified through the Windows Azure–based service.
Solidsoft was selected to develop and operate the EMVS with the only proposal for a public cloud-based infrastructure. This will reduce the cost of ownership and delivery time while helping to ensure a robust, secure, and scalable solution that will be deployed across the EU.
