The Lombardia region in northern Italy has recently earned a reputation as a leader in Europe’s open data movement, launching dati.lombardia.it. Powered by the Socrata Open Data Portal running on Windows Azure, it hosts more than 430 datasets and visualizations on a range of topics, from museum locations for visitors to government spending information.

The team at Lombardia publishes datasets that are most useful to citizens, and recently hosted the OpenApp Lombardia competition, encouraging residents to create Web and mobile applications using open data. The top prize went to ReadIt, a search engine for book inventories within Lombardia libraries, giving users the ability to search by various fields and verify availability.

The region is using open data as an integral part of its strategy to modernize government and build for the future.

For more on how Lombardia is using open data solutions to improve transparency and public services, please see the Socrata site and the Openness@Microsoft blog.
