Use of the hybrid cloud can positively impact enterprises of all industries, including oil and gas, where even small improvements in information technology can make an enormous financial impact. Energy companies are typically looking for ways to make their IT more self-service oriented, more efficient, more standardized and more compliant.
A recent example involved a Texas-based firm that supports oilfields and equipment with over 50,000 employees. This organization had outsourced most of its datacenter services, which solved the problem of who does the work, but failed to make deployment more efficient.
The solution leveraged both Microsoft System Center and Windows Server to virtualize the most common and time-consuming workloads. The result was the ability to keep better records of provisioning steps, approvals and configuration data – all of which is vital in such a heavily regulated industry. Building on the success of the initial project, this solution was expanded and deployed to eight datacenters and now handles all provisioning requests.
