Like a lot of folks this holiday season, if you’re planning to make calls to friends and loved ones, there are some last-minute things you can do to make sure your Skype experience is the best possible, writes Matthew de Beer on Skype’s Tips & Tricks blog.

If you’re planning to use a laptop or desktop PC, getting a headset “still is the key to great sound quality,” he writes. A headset will get the microphone closer to your mouth and “means the sound is captured by a far better microphone than the ones which are typically built into a laptop.”

You can have a look at some of the recommended headsets in the Skype Shop.

If you’re using Skype on Xbox One, that’s a neat way to get everyone in on the call, he says. You can use Kinect 2.0, which has a great microphone and camera that can pick up everyone in the room. A headset might not be much help, but a USB speakerphone, such as the Jabra SPEAK410, makes it easy for everyone to get in the call with good sound quality.
