Natural user interface allows people to interact with technology using gestures, voice commands and body movements. And now in Melbourne, Australia, the launch of the Microsoft Centre for Social Natural User Interface Research will take this even further with interdisciplinary research that spurs the development of applications that advance communication, collaboration, and social interaction at home and work.

As the Microsoft Research Connections Blog reports, this is a joint research center between the University of Melbourne and Microsoft Research, in partnership with the state government of Victoria and Microsoft Australia. The center will explore applications of natural user interfaces in social situations.

You may be familiar with NUI through devices such as the Kinect for Xbox 360. And ever since the release of the Kinect for Windows software development kit in 2011, developers have created applications that go way beyond gaming, such as being able to view medical images during surgery.
