Two sisters, who due to time and circumstances had not seen each other in 30 years, were recently able to see and talk to one another for the first time since Jimmy Carter was president of the United States.
Mary Helen and her sister Betty live more than 1,500 miles apart. Finances and health issues kept them from seeing one another, though they occasionally chatted over the phone. Mary Helen had never met her sister’s children, which was one of her dearest wishes in addition to seeing her sister again.
An application was filled out on 87-year-old Mary Helen’s behalf to the Wish of a Lifetime organization, which wanted to help make her wishes come true. Betty was not in good enough health to make the trip. But her daughters were flown from Nebraska to Florida, where Mary Helen lives in an assisted living community, to meet their aunt for the first time. After delighting in their presence, Mary Helen got one more surprise – her nieces connected her with Betty, via Skype.
“I could not believe that I could see my sweet sister’s face and hear her voice so clearly,” Mary Helen said. “I was in shock!”
The two sisters plan to use Skype regularly to keep in touch, so it won’t be another 30 years before they see one another’s faces again.
