The Apps for Office development platform makes it possible to bring new experiences to Office applications by allowing developers to surface Web technologies and cloud services from within Office apps. The JavaScript API for Office makes bringing those new experiences to Office apps even easier by combining the simplicity of Web development with the richness of the productivity apps.

To show you how easy it is, the Office team created an interactive tutorial that teaches developers and would-be developers how to get started writing code for an Office app using the JavaScript API. The API Tutorial for Office teaches you how to perform basic development tasks by letting you run and edit JavaScript code directly in Microsoft Excel.

Juan Balmori, program manager of the JavaScript API for Office, provides some great examples of why developers might want to use the JavaScript API to build apps that interact with document data to create powerful (and cool) apps.

See how the API tutorial works and find related resources in this post on the Apps for Office and SharePoint blog.
