I just read your article on the free upgrade to Win Server 2008 R2 standard but saw that the time frame expired a while back. Do you know what product we would need to buy and if it is possible to do a “In-place” upgrade of Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation to Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard" ?

While this upgrade is supported, like always, please make a backup of your server before you make a change like this. We have tested this upgrade scenario, but there may be third party applications (like Anti-virus) that could impact your ability to upgrade the server. Having a good backup is crucial if you run into problems during the upgrade process.
I hope this helps with your upgrade plan.
Until next time,
