Tip o' the Week 315 – Getting to know Windows 10 Mobile

clip_image001There was a time when the software “ship cycle” resulted in delivery of the final version, the “Gold” code (so called as it would have been written to a gold-coloured recordable CD), which was RTM’ed then sent off to get pressed onto CD or even copied onto magnetic disks.

Nowadays, there generally isn’t ever a “finished” version – there’s the initial release, then a whole stream of updates, patches, service releases, feature packs etc.

Windows 10 Mobile (the new moniker for Windows Phone) has been slated for release for a little while now, even though there are phones out there shipping with it ready installed, and there are more to come soon – maybe some news will follow at Mobile World Congress later in February. There’s now a page that will show details of updates to Windows 10 Mobile– there’s not a lot on it right now, but check out the Windows 10 version if you want to see what to expect. Commentators are suggesting that the fact the update page exists means the wide-scale rollout of Windows 10 Mobile to existing Windows Phone 8.x devices must be imminent.

Get it early

If you want to install Windows 10 Mobile on your existing phone, it’s very easy to do – just install the Windows Insider app on your device, sign in with your Microsoft Account, and when you run the app it will ask you what degree of pain excitement you’re prepared to tolerate enjoy. The Insiders Fast“ring” will give you the biggest thrill, but especially in early stages of the development cycle, might break things that worked previously. The Slow ring clip_image004will give you stuff that’s been run by the Fast people for a while, and is known to be in good shape. You can switch between the rings, so if you choose to go Slow but never get any updates, you can always step up the pace a bit. There’s a new “Release Preview” ring now too,

Read more about the Insider program here; get the app from here.

Latest release

Fast and Slow rings have been given the 10586.107 build (in fact, that’s also gone to any existing W10 Mobile user too), which is being reported as “Production Ready” and rumoured to be the build that will be rolled out to other devices, said to be coming any day now. If you’re running Windows Phone 8.x and fancy previewing Windows 10 Mobile, or if you’ve already got a 950 or 950XL and are looking to get the latest & greatest build, then make sure you grab this one. User reports say that devices are running noticeably faster and battery life is greatly improved.

Check out your current version by going to Settings -> About -> More Info on Windows Phone 8.x,
or Settings -> System -> About on Windows 10 Mobile.

What’s new in Windows 10 Mobile

clip_image006There’s a new UI, some changes that are obvious when compared to WP8.x, but some are more subtle. The Notifications area at the top of the phone, for example, can show all the common settings and includes shortcut features like a Flashlight, or quick jump to OneNote.

Find out more about what’s new, here.

If you have a new handset, there are some other obvious changes – like the 3 buttons at the bottom of the screen now being on-screen rather than below it (so the screen can be bigger). Those buttons will disappear in some apps that go full-screen (like games, or videos), so you may need to swipe up from the bottom of the screen to show them.

Also, if you’ve a new device, you’ll notice that it’s using USB-C– a further evolution of the USB standard with a reversible connector (hooray!) – hopefully no more damaging the connector by jamming it in the wrong way. You might not be able to bend the connector, but powering the device can still be something of a minefield.

USB-C cables are not all the same

If you got a Lumia 950 or 950XL, you may notice that the USB cable that comes with it looks like the kind of thing you’d find connecting an electric car to the charging stations in the car park. It turns out that good USB-C cables are quite differentiated from the generic junk you could buy for $1 on eBay or $15 from Best Buy.

Since you’ve probably got a house-full of Micro-USB cables & chargers cluttering the place up, you might wonder how to work USB-C into your life without too much friction. Well, Googley engineer Benson Leung has done a great job of putting lots of USB-C cables & adapters through their paces, and declaring which ones will set fire to your power supply, make your phone go into meltdown or which ones to get. Basically, if Benson gives it 2 stars, then don’t bother.

If you’re after the tl;dr version and you’re in the UK, just go and buy this £7 cable and these £5 Micro-USB->USB-C adapters(so you can plug your phone into your existing car charger without too much faffing and changing cable). Yes, £7 seems a lot for a USB doofer when you could find them on fleabay for a quid, but guff cables could do more harm than good. Benson Leung for President!

Some additional early-stage tips for getting to grips with your new Lumia 950/XL:

  • Make sure you run the Phone Update from Settings / Update & security / Phone update
  • When you plug the phone in and the battery icon shows the charging symbol, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s charging. You may find that it’s just plugged in, but not getting power (especially if it makes the bada-la-doop noise every 15 secs). Props to Nick Page for pointing this out.
  • There’s no way to turn on “Hey Cortana” from the All settings menu, andusingfind a setting” for “Cortana”, doesn’t (apparently). Instead, start Cortana (press/hold the magnifying glass), press the hamburger menu in the top left, and still, there’s no settings etc. Start Notebook from that Cortana menu, and you’ll see Settings from within, and you can switch on, Hey, Cortana. Bonzer.

Winking smile

Continuum

image
Continuum

Да, и World of Tanks BLITZ в Continuumтоже покажу, хотя лучше “это” и не видеть  Winking smile

В этом обзоре Microsoft Lumia 950 XL и технологии Continuumрешил "убить сразу 2х зайцев" - и про Continuum наглядно рассказать и протестировать скорость работы World of Tanks BLITZ на Microsoft Lumia 950 XL.

Итак, "простой" запуск World of Tanks BLITZ на Lumia 950 XL - имеется ввиду просто на экране телефона - показал 40 fps при высоких настройках WoT BLITZ. NVIDIA Shield Portable .

image

Windows 10 Mobile?

Microsoft Lumia 950 XL.

image

  • 802.11n. Wi-Fi Direct Services (WFDS)
80 msec

Microsoft Lumia 950 XL.

Winking smile

Microsoft Office 2016

image

Microsoft Lumia 950 XL.

Kreativ mit Stift und Touch: Warum Creative Cloud Apps wie Photoshop und Illustrator auf Surface mehr können - Ein Gastbeitrag von Stefan von Gagern

0
0

The future of Adobe creative applications on Microsoft devices“.

How to Explain What is Cloud Computing for your Grandma?

0

Cloud or Cloud computing is a term that has dominated the media. Even those who do not work directly with technology must have heard it too. It's hard to spend a day without hearing someone comment on. And you? What do you mean by cloud computing?

Recently, a friend who works in the area, said:
"- My relatives ask what I do at work, but I cannot adequately explain. What to say so when my grandmother one day asked me: "

How would you explain that for someone doesn't have computer skills? Your Grandma, for example?

Friday Morning Rant – Premise and Tenents

0
0

Since it’s Friday, let’s have a non-technical post.  You will likely have realized that I have some OCD and language issues.  This can come through in various forms, it may be how someone insists on saying “anyways” rather than anyway, or the latest internal Microspeak babble.  Raymond Chen has a dedicated tag to track the Microspeak nonsense which he hears.  His blog is well worth a read even if you are not a developer!

Anyway – rant on….

Since we launched Office 365, the term on-premises was used to describe the infrastructure and services which operate in the customer's datacentre.  This is commonly transposed to “premise” or “on-premise”.   This has been around for a while, but recently I've started seeing a new one.

Your portion or environment within the overall Office 365 service is called a tenant.  Depending upon what you purchased controls the services and features available within your tenant, and by extension to your users.  Recently I’ve seen people start to call it an Office 365 “tenent” – note the lack of an ‘a’.

Interesting enough the words “tenant” and “premise” are related since they both refer to the notion of an idea or belief.

Cheers,

Rhoderick

If you haven’t got a question then Machine Learning is not the answer

0
0

I am in the middle of preparing for some more events the next big one being a day of machine learning (ML) at SQL Saturday Exeter.  The organisers asked me to make a short video to explain what I’ll be covering and that got me to thinking about what my advice would be having worked with the tool for a good year.

What’s the question?  Unlike many aspects of BI and data mining we are not on a fishing expedition, and although ML can just be use to explore data with its built in tools or via your own Python / R scripts that is not what is was designed for.  The typical use cases for ML - predictive maintenance, customer churn, sentiment analysis are all about answering very specific questions when will a part fail, which customers am I about to loose, was that tweet being nice about me or not?

Does the answer lead to action? At recent briefing on ethics in medical data one of the speaker remarked that a significant factor in patients not completing their treatment was their credit card rating , the lower it was the more likely they would drop out.  The problem is that it’s not easy to see what to do about that (no suggestions please), whereas in more typical customer churn scenarios, we might setup some sort of offer to retain those at risk.

For me this is why ML has not quite taken in many organisation as expected based on the massive interest in it – It wows everyone but then it becomes of a question of applying it in organisations. Having said that I think a massive area is process automation and checking e.g. in contracts and financial approvals to detect fraud and spot mistakes.

ML is not perfect.  We are very used to humans making mistakes indeed I would argue unless you made a mistake today you haven’t learnt anything. Learning machines also make mistakes - they can’t perfectly recognise speech or images for example. However they are starting to equal or out perform us in some of these areas.  My point here is to have a process in place to handle this. Say we are in the business of approving  loan applications -  If ML is not confident of the outcome it will have a mid-range confidence value (say 0.33 to 0.66), where a lower score will automatically be rejected and a higher one accepted.  For the mid range values we might then refer it to a human to decide.  Similarly if ML can’t decode the postcode on a letter then maybe a human can- but then again in image recognition ML has ben proved to be better at humans when it comes to recognising objects and faces.

ML needs to be retrained.  An example is the way to explain this – an algorithm for basket recommendation maybe superb but when new products appear there are no patterns to follow and even if they are these may not be typical behaviour.  So for production you’ll need a process to do this retraining and ideally this should be programmatic rather than interactive.  This is not any harder than consuming an API as you would to make a prediction. However in this case it’s a batch call with your training set as the argument.

Algorithmsare about numbers not industries.  The patient not following though on treatment, the student dropping out of a course are just like the customer churn long used in retail and the same algorithms will work equally well in these other areas as all ML is doing is comparing correlations of factors against what we are trying to predict.  Similarly anomaly detection works for bank fraud and for predictive maintenance

Not your normal neural network.  Buried in the neural network module in ML is ability to do deep learning using a special scripting language net# (nothing to do with .Net really). It is more for the hardened data scientist and if you want to know more check this session at last year’s Cortana Analytics Workshop.

ChChChanges.  ML is continually evolving and this is important for two reasons, one check back regularly to see what has been added, and two if you have feedback then share it to drive features you feel you need.  A good example of this is the much deeper support for Python in ML.  However I am more interested in seeing more algorithms e.g. time series analysis and more OpenCV modules to handle images, both of which will mean we should be writing less of our own code anyway.

Do Something.  The only way to begin to see the potential of ML in your organisation is to try it. Yes you need a question, yes you need data, and yes you do need to be scientific in your approach to the problem.  However you don’t need to be a full on data scientist, you just need their curiosity, added to you data wrangling skills and business knowledge.  The Cortana Analytics Gallery is awash with interesting business based scenarios and tutorials to help you, so don’t just sit there…

(SQL) Tip of the Day: Several Improvements to SQL Azure Geo-replication

Today’s Tip…

Geo-replication has gotten some love recently. We have added the ability to manage geo-replication via T-SQL instead of just the portal and PowerShell. We added a failover/failback concept which will allow for DR drills without completely breaking down your replication. We also now allow for the secondary database to be a lower service object tier.

You can read all about the changes here: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/spotlight-on-new-capabilities-of-azure-sql-database-geo-replication/

Can’t get Wi-Fi or VPN profile with certificate based authentication to work on Windows Phone 10?

0
0

~ Karan Rustagi

Consider a scenario where a Wi-Fi or VPN profile is pushed either via Configuration Manager or Intune to Windows Phone 10. Profile is configured to use SCEP profile – Certificate for authentication. You can see the profile on device but it fails to connect. Thanks to a colleague in Windows Phone team who suggested this may happen if more than one certificate is present on the device that has at least one same Enhanced Key Usage or an Application Policy as in the certificate pushed via SCEP profile. You can check this by installing Certificates application from Store on device. Look under Personal store.

What’s the solution?

You can add a unique Application Policy to certificate template and configure the profile to use it to fix the problem. See detailed steps below. I’ll use a Wi-Fi profile in Configuration Manager as an example.

1. Edit the certificate template used in SCEP profile.

2. Select Application Policies and click on Edit.

3. Click on Add.

clip_image004

4. Click on New and Type a Name. Copy and Paste Object Identifier in a txt file. You will need this later. Click on OK and OK again.

clip_image006

clip_image008

5. Select newly added Application Policy and click on OK.

clip_image010

6. You should now see new Application Policy listed along with existing ones. Click on OK.

clip_image012

7. Click on Apply and then OK.

clip_image014

8. Open Configuration Manager console. Refresh Certificate template in SCEP profile linked with Wi-Fi profile. You should now see newly added OID (Step 4) under Enhanced Key usage. Click on Apply and OK.

(To refresh settings – Select some other template, click on Apply and then Select NDES template again.)

clip_image016

9. Edit Wi-Fi profile. Under Security Configuration tab click on Configure.

clip_image018

10. Click on Advanced in Smart card or other Certificate Properties dialog box.

clip_image020

11. Click on Add, Add again, Paste Name and OID of EKU from txt file created in Step 4. Click on OK and OK again.

clip_image022

12. Ensure newly added EKU is listed. Click on OK and wait for ~15 minutes for changes to be uploaded to Intune alternatively you can restart SMS_DMP_Uploader thread from Service Manager.

clip_image024

13. Enrol a WP 10 device and check if it now connects to company Wi-Fi.

Note: Steps would largely be the same for standalone Intune apart from adding an additional EKU in profile. If you use an XML to push Wi-Fi or VPN profile than add new EKU in following section:

<EKUMapping><EKUMap><EKUName>MobCert</EKUName><EKUOID>1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1</EKUOID></EKUMap></EKUMapping>

Excel Online - Compatibility Report - Text Queries

0
0

This particular blog is going to handle how to deal with Text queries appearing in the Compatibility Report.

"Compatibility Report
Text Queries
But you can see all the content in this workbook by
Opening the file in Excel."

You can fix this several different ways.

1. Edit a Copy, which will remove the unsupported feature.

2. If you know where the Text query is, you can remove the query definition.

3. If you cannot locate the text query, you can use our tool to locate it, and then remove it.

1. Edit a Copy, which will remove the unsupported feature.

You will be prompted "Edit a Copy"

You can then create a Copy.

This will create a clean version of the workbook without any unsupported features.  It will also keep the Original workbook in the event the removal of these features broke your workbook.

2. If you know where the Text query is, you can remove the query definition.

You can right click on the table and untick Query definition > Save query definition under External Data Range Properties.

You can click a cell in the data range > Data tab > Properties > untick Save query definition

3. If you cannot locate the text query, you can use our tool to locate it, and then remove it.

Run the attached add-in (simply double click ListQT.xlam when your bad workbook is open).  You will now see a List Query Tables tab.  You can then choose the List QueryTables chunk and this will show you the Query Table sheet and range.   You can either delete it from the add-in or browse the locate and follow the steps in #2.

(Please visit the site to view this file)

Disclaimer: this add-in is provided to you as courtesy and is "as-is".  Anytime you are making changes to a workbook, it is recommended to create a backup in case you need to revert your changes.rrrr

OSI model.

OSI is a sevel layer conceptual model that is logically used to present the logical layers between which the data is going to travel. the below seven layers are described below:

Upper data layer:

it contains of three top layers of OSI:

1. Application layer, the top layer that actually contains applications like telnet, http, DNS or any other layer that actually is responsible for starting the communication or with whom the user directly interacts.

2. Presentation layer: this layer provides the context for the communication like the ASCII characters or the ASCII characters, and SSL comes here.

3. Sessions layer; responsible for the creating the sessions between the computer, netbios and sap.

4. transport layer: TCP and UDP resides here, this layer is responsible for the segmenting the data, end to end connection and reliability is a consideration along with flow control.

5. network layer: the data is further broken into the packets. IPv4 and IPv6 work here. data is broken into packets. Routing and switching happens at this layer.

6. Data link layer: Provides the connection between the two hosts that are in the same subnet, componenets like MAC address resides here.

7. Physical layer: the layer where actual data is transmitted across. it includes all the cabling and other hardware stuff.

Install the Active Directory PowerShell Module on Windows 10

Today I share a script to automate all of the manual steps involved with setting up the Active Directory PowerShell module on your Windows 10 workstation.

Clickety, Click. Scripty, script.

I recently reloaded my everyday work laptop. After three years it had in-place upgrades from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. You can imagine that we dogfood a lot of software as Microsoft employees, so it was well past time for a reload.

As part of this I had to set up the Active Directory module. Since the process was more than one quick step, I decide this deserves a script to help everyone else in the world as well. How many steps does it take?

  • Find and download the CPU-architecture-appropriate Windows 10 RSAT package (Remote Server Administration Tools)
  • Install the RSAT
  • Enable the Active Directory PowerShell feature
  • Update-Help for the AD module

This is mostly a one-time task, except for updating the module help. Generally I only script things that are more repeatable. However, I know many of you like to reload your laptop on a regular basis. I also know that lots of people are deploying Windows 10 right now. So this seemed like a good community service project.

The Script

This script needs to run from an elevated ISE or console session, since it is configuring your system. Obviously it will only run on Windows 10, because that is the goal.

Like any good PowerShell scripter I borrowed code from various sources on the internet. I included comments with the links where I found handy code for downloading a file, installing a hotfix, etc.

Rather than explain the entire script line-by-line, I’ll provide the interesting parts here with comments. DO NOT copy/paste/run the code below.  It is not complete. Use the download link at the bottom of this post to get a copy of the full script.

#requires -RunAsAdministrator

# Is the OS Windows 10?
If ((Get-CimInstance Win32_OperatingSystem).Caption -like "*Windows 10*")

# Is the RSAT already installed?
If (Get-HotFix -Id KB2693643 -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue)

# Is this x86 or x64 CPU?
If ((Get-CimInstance Win32_ComputerSystem).SystemType -like "x64*")

# Download the hotfix for RSAT install
$WebClient = New-Object System.Net.WebClient
$WebClient.DownloadFile($URL,$Destination)
$WebClient.Dispose()

# Install the hotfix. No native PowerShell way that I could find.
# wusa.exe returns immediately. Loop until install complete.
wusa.exe $Destination /quiet /norestart /log:$home\Documents\RSAT.log
do {
    Write-Host "." -NoNewline
    Start-Sleep -Seconds 3
} until (Get-HotFix -Id KB2693643 -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue)

# Double-check that the role is enabled after install.
If ((Get-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName `
    RSATClient-Roles-AD-Powershell -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue).State `
    -eq 'Enabled') {

Write-Verbose '---RSAT AD PowerShell already enabled'

} Else {

    Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName `
         RSATClient-Roles-AD-Powershell
}

# Install the help
Update-Help -Module ActiveDirectory -Verbose -Force

# Optionally verify the install.
dir (Join-Path -Path $HOME -ChildPath Downloads\*msu)
Get-HotFix -Id KB2693643
Get-Help Get-ADDomain
Get-ADDomain

I turned this into a function with full help and verbose output. I always like watching the blue verbose scroll as PowerShell runs. You get that sense of satisfaction that everything in the world is good when you watch your own code perform. #nerdthrills
