Working with Windows Startup Processes and PowerShell

Summary: Ed Wilson, Microsoft Scripting Guy, talks about using Windows PowerShell to examine startup processes in Windows 10.

Microsoft Scripting Guy, Ed Wilson, is here. This morning I am playing with the Xbox One Smart Glass app on Windows 10. I have used the app since it was in beta, and I just got my Xbox One. But I have started using the Pandora app on my Xbox One, and I like to do stuff like mute advertisements, skip boring songs, change stations, and otherwise control the app.

Yeah, I can use my Xbox controller, and with a recent firmware update, it does connect faster, and has better battery life, but it is bulky on my workstation. I wanted something better, so I updated the Xbox One Smart Glass app. It works great. It connects fast, and I can do everything I want to do. Here is the screen layout:

Image of menu

I click the little remote control icon in the lower-right corner, and it opens an Xbox controller emulator that permits me to completely move around and do what I need to do. When I am done, I close it. Because it connects really fast, I don’t worry about having access to it. I pinned it to my Windows 10 start screen, so it is available. Cool. Some things just work.

The proliferating startup process problem

Some things just work, and then there are some things that seem to remain a pain. Windows startup applications are such a pain point—at least for me. I recently installed a new printer (which did not seem to have a driver, and instead required a quarter-gigabyte monolithic installation, and once installed, immediately required updating…yeah I know, I am a whiner) and a few other things required for work.

This morning I turned on my laptop, and behold! I was greeted with a notice that said I had so many startup applications that they were killing my poor three-year-old laptop…or words to that effect.

So I launched Task Manager, went to the Startup tab, and disabled a bunch of startup applications:

Using PowerShell to find startup processes

After I had disabled some startup processes via Task Manager, I decided to check on some other processes. I used Windows PowerShell to produce a list of startup processes. The command uses the Win32_StartUpCommand WMI class. To access this, I use the Get-CimInstance cmdlet (gcim is an alias):

gcim win32_startupcommand

The command and its output are shown here:

Image of command output

Hmmm. It looks like some of the processes I disabled are still running. Bummer. But before I throw my poor little laptop across the room and possibly break something (other than my laptop), I decide to use another WMI class to investigate things further.

This time I use the Win32_Process WMI class because it has the CommandLine property that will show me what command line is used to start a particular process. I can match that with the Command property from Win32_StartupCommand. There are a lot of processes running in Windows 10, and I want to filter some. First of all, I look for a command line that contains OneDrive:

gcim win32_process | where commandline -match 'onedrive'

Well, what about Lync?

gcim win32_process | where commandline -match 'lync'

Neither of these appear. So I decide to do a more generic Lenovo query. The output is shown here:

PS C:\> gcim win32_process | where commandline -match 'lenovo'

ProcessId Name                HandleCount WorkingSetSize VirtualSize

--------- ----                ----------- -------------- -----------

2660      tphkload.exe        233         5353472        87777280

2668      micmute.exe         187         2768896        76730368

4032      tpnumlkd.exe        132         2363392        62742528

4376      tposd.exe           111         2011136        86228992

1288      shtctky.exe         130         1716224        93081600

5808      SynLenovoHelper.exe 129         2801664        90853376

6992      RAVBg64.exe         264         6230016        119590912

It appears that even though some of startup applications are listed, Task Manager is effectively disabling the apps. Cool. So sometimes things actually do work.

That is all there is to using Windows PowerShell to examine startup processes. Join me tomorrow when I will talk about PowerShell Saturday in Tampa.

I invite you to follow me on Twitter and Facebook. If you have any questions, send email to me at scripter@microsoft.com, or post your questions on the Official Scripting Guys Forum. See you tomorrow. Until then, peace.

Tip o' the Week 310 – New Year, new Outlook discipline

0

clip_image002Now that the festive period is behind us, it’s time to get back to the mundanity of the New Year. The salad bar in every restaurant is heaving, every gym has lots of red-faced semi-exuberant new members, and offices are chock full of workers who want to do things better this time around.

Those of you who ended 2015 with a clear inbox and task list, well done! Those of us who have a new resolution to get more organised in 2016, well, read on.

clip_image004The “Getting Things Done” methodology (or GTD to its many devotees) espouses a system for making sure you don’t forget stuff and that you can prioritise what’s important, and like any similar system, it shies away from telling you which tool to use – if a stack of printed cards works for you, then go for it. There is, predictably, much discussion online as to which software tools to use and how to set them up “just so”. YMMV.

Out of the box, Outlook isn’t a fabulously GTD-optimised tool. There are numerous addins and guides online to try to get it set up in a suitable way (such as ClearContext, as featured in ToW #233), but true GTD evangelists often give up trying to wrangle Outlook tasks to do what they want: Wunderlist has a new tranche of fanatics. It’ll be interesting to see if and how its task management ideals start to bleed into other tools like Outlook.

Follow me, follow you

If you are a habitual email user and Outlook is your main tool, there are a couple of simple things that everyone could do without needing to get stuck into categories, tasks, projects and the likes.

  • clip_image006Change your startup folder– When you start Outlook, do you really want to jump straight to your inbox, with all of the distractions it contains? What about starting in Tasks or Calendar instead? Easy – just go to File -> Options -> Advanced and you can pick a different place for Outlook to default to.
  • clip_image008Create a search folder for your flagged mail– if you routinely flag messages for follow up, then it’s a good idea to keep track of them all. The Outlook tasks view can do that for you, but it can be a little confusing, especially if you rely on Wunderlist or some other tasks management app.
If you expand the Search Folders list in Outlook (in the tree view on the left) you’ll see special folders that are actually a saved query, presenting the results to you from across your mailbox. If you don’t already have a “For Follow Up” folder (or similar), just right-click on the Search Folders heading, clip_image010click New Search Folder and choose Mail flagged for follow up. This will create a new search folder fo you, and could even be set as the default folder (as per the first bullet).

Scheduled start

The problem here is, most of us don’t start Outlook from scratch very often – laptops get put to sleep and woken up again, and it could be days or weeks between reboots, so most of the time, you already have lots of Outlook windows open.

To work around this, we can fall back on a technology that’s been part of Windows since NT 3.1, all of 22 years ago – the AT command. This allows the console operator (ie you) to schedule some background task within the bowels of the OS, and to specify how it runs as well as when – will it be silent, will it be able to interact with the current logged in user?

The intrepid among you could delve into AT (just start a command prompt by pressing WindowsKey+X and choose the Command Prompt (Admin) from there) but most of us would prefer to use the Task Scheduler UI that was built to make the process easier. Reading the instructions below, this might sound like a faff, but if you follow them step-by-step, it’ll take 2 minutes.

What we’re going to do is to set a time when a new Outlook window will be fired up, at a specific folder. So, you could say at 7:00am or the next available time after (ie when your machine wakes from sleep), then create a new Outlook window pointing to the Follow Up search folder we just created above.

clip_image012Start by running the Task Schedulerclip_image014(press start, type task s…). Don’t be put off if you see lots of tasks you don’t recognise. Expand the Task Scheduler Library and right-click on Microsoft then Create Basic Task. This will walk you through a wizard to set up the task.

  • Call it something like DailyOutlook(next), choose a frequency – daily (next) then a time (7am?) (next), You want to start a program (next)
  • Now you need to find the path to the Outlook executable – it’s likely to be
“C:\Program Files (x86)\microsoft office\root\Office16\OUTLOOK.EXE” or similar – try copying that text and enter it into the Run command (WindowsKey+R)– if it launches Outlook, you’re in business. If it doesn’t, then you might need to search your computer for OUTLOOK.EXE, and copy that path to the appropriate file.
  • Enter the appropriate path, wrapped in quotes (“”), into the task wizard Program/script box and in the Add arguments box, enter /select "outlook:search folders\For Follow Up", or whatever folder you want to open (just put the path and folder name in the bit after outlook: in the argument above).
    • To test that argument, try just running (via WindowsKey+R)
outlook /select "outlook:search folders\missed conversations" (or whatever your path is)
      clip_image016
  • clip_image018When you get to the end of the task wizard, tell it that you want to open the properties dialog for the task when you click finish. Navigate to the Settings tab, and check the box that you’d like to Run task as soon as possible after a scheduled start is missed– this way, if your laptop was still asleep at 7am, it would run Outlook up next time you log in. You might as well check the “restart every…” one too.

Now you can OK out of the properties and return to the task list view – right-click on your newly-created task, and try “Run”- you may not see the Outlook window come to the fore, but if you look on your task bar, at the collection of Outlook windows you may otherwise have, then it should be there. If you see the “Last run result” in the task view showing something other than (0x0), then something went wrong – you may want to open the task up again, and check that you’ve got the right path to Outlook and the right path to your chosen folder.

Automagically Keep the Azure PowerShell Module Up-To-Date

I'm a tidy(ish) person. Tidy desk, tidy mind and all that jazz... as someone once said!

I like to keep my PowerShell house in order. I want the latest help files and the latest versions of my modules.

I've been able to use a cmdlet to keep my help files up-to-date since version 3 of PS. With the advent of version 5 and the PowerShellGet module, I can now automagically keep my modules up-to-date, too.

PowerShellGet lets you find, install and update modules from an online repository. It comes with the Update-Module cmdlet. I've update my $profile so that every time my console host starts as Administrator, I attempt to update the Azure module.

Here's what the snippet looks like:

if (([Security.Principal.WindowsPrincipal][Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity]::GetCurrent()).IsInRole(`

[Security.Principal.WindowsBuiltInRole]"Administrator"))

{

Start-Job-ScriptBlock {Update-Help-Force}

Start-Job-ScriptBlock {Update-ModuleAzure-Verbose}

}

For both the help update and the module update I run the tasks as jobs in the background. I can then check their status with Get-Job and Receive-Job. Without the -Force parameter, Update-Module will only update the target module if a new version is available. I like to run it with -Verbose so I can see what happened if I retrieve the job.

Easy.

PS - I've also recently added the following lines to keep up with 'The AzureRM Jonses'...

Start-Job-ScriptBlock {Update-ModuleAzureRM-Verbose}

Start-Job-ScriptBlock {Update-AzureRM-Verbose}*

*I've yet to find a way to prevent this bad-boy updating every time it's executed. You can use the Install-ModuleWithVersionCheck for individual components of AzureRM, but I've not written something to process each module yet...

How tech can help you keep your New Year’s resolutions

Editorial Team

With 2016 already in full swing, people around the world will be setting themselves New Year’s resolutions. But 88% of all those set resolutions fail, leaving most people feeling a bit disappointed in themselves. There are certain neurological reasons why we tend not to keep our New Year’s resolutions, but in the digital world we live in there are certain tech solutions that can help us power through.

Train your brain
Neurologically, we need willpower to help us stick to our New Year’s resolutions. We also need them to become habits rather than abstract thoughts and we need to hold ourselves accountable. Luckily, technology makes each of these steps easy to achieve.
Apps like “Mind: Brain Train” in the Windows Store stimulate your brain, helping to improve short-term memory, which is linked to willpower. There are also several goal-setting apps like “GoalsOnTrack”, which help you to set realistic goals, and “21habits”, which hold you accountable by requiring you to make a payment upfront and then refunding you for each day you have succeeded in sticking to your goal.

Resolution: stay fit and healthy
The most popular New Year’s resolution according to Nielsen, a consumer research firm, is to get and stay fit and healthy. The Microsoft Health app helps you live a healthier life by giving you actionable insights into how your physical activity benefits your overall health and how to improve your fitness levels. The Microsoft Health app works with the phone you own and you can sync your Microsoft Health data with apps like MyFitnessPal, Strava,RunKeeper, and MapMyFitness.

Resolution: lose weight
Unsurprisingly, losing weight is another popular resolution. “Weight Loss Manager”, available in the Windows Store, is a great app to help you do just that. Enter your weight checks and activities every day and get tips for getting healthy and fit. You can also see your progress and see which exercise burns the most calories.

Resolution: spend less, save more
Even if this isn’t your New Year’s resolution, it’s probably in the back of your mind. While the growth of online shopping could burn a hole in your pocket, it’s also a convenient way to hunt for bargains. Don’t rush into the first store you see, rather use your smart phone to shop around and find the best deal. Spending Tracker and Budget Buddy are two popular apps that help you keep track of all your expenses and spending habits. By tracking your spending you will be able to stick to a budget and therefore SAVE.

Resolution: spend more time with friends and family
We live in a world where most of us have friends and family living overseas or out of town. Thanks to technology, that’s no reason to lose touch. Microsoft’s “Skype” app works across all devices, running silently in the background, ready to notify you when a call or instant message comes in. Don’t miss out on those special moments just because you’re far away.

Resolution: get organised
When life gets busy, it can be difficult to stay organised and remember all our commitments. That’s where an app like “Todoist” comes in handy. It’s a simple way of pushing notifications to your desktop for reminders, and allows you to clear a completed task easily (nothing’s more satisfying than ticking something off that to-do list).

Resolution: learn something new
Nothing like a new year to inspire a burst of creativity. To keep the creative juices flowing, why not try apps like “Fresh Paint” to experience the joy of slapping paint on canvas, or “Music Maker Jam” to try your hand at blending your own music mixes? And, for the budding photographers out there, the Lumia’s 20-megapixel camera is a great tool with its features like triple LED natural flash and Rich Capture.

Resolution: travel more
We might live in a global village, but travelling still tops many bucket lists. The travel industry has been revolutionised thanks to technology, putting the power into your hands. Apps like “TripAdvisor” and “EatOut Restaurant Guide 2015” help you find and book the perfect hotel or restaurant to fit your budget, based on other patrons’ reviews.

Resolution: read more
Once you’ve travelled the world, got fit and healthy and learned something new, it’s time to get back to basics. Reading is a great resolution to help you destress and gain more knowledge at the same time. Use “Goodreads” to find the perfect book, discuss and analyse your book on “Readmill” and learn to speed read using “Syllable”.

Don’t be put off making those resolutions – use technology to help you have a successful, fulfilling 2016.

Rich Capture.

Five things you didn’t know you could do with your Windows Lumia

0

By: Kingori Gitahi Product Manager, Microsoft Mobile, WECA

Our mobile phones have become an extension of who we are. They’re our first port of call for communication, business, photography and entertainment. Microsoft’s range of Windows Lumia phones are no different. Not only are they sleek in design and easy on the wallet, but they also boast several features that make everyday life easier.

We picked out the top five things you probably didn’t know your Lumia could do. We think they’re game changers no matter what you use your phone for.

Unlock your phone just by looking at it
Thanks to Windows 10’s new Hello feature and an iris scanner located in the top right hand corner of the Lumia, unlocking your phone has never been easier. You can unlock your phone easily and securely, simply by looking at it – no PIN or password required.

To do this, go to Settings > Personalisation > Lock Screen > Sign-In Options. Find the Windows Hello option and once you’ve taken a few seconds to stare into the front-facing camera, you’re all set.

Turn your phone into a PC
The Continuum feature allows you to turn your Lumia into a fully-fledged PC simply by connecting it to Microsoft’s Display Dock, a mouse and keyboard, and an external display. Just like that, all your phone’s content appears on the bigger screen, automatically adjusted to fit the new size and resolution. It looks just like Windows 10 on a PC.

Even better, when your phone is connected to the external monitor and you are using the display to work in the Office apps or let your kids watch a movie, you can continue to use your phone to check emails and answer calls. If you don’t have an external mouse, you can also choose to use your phone’s screen as a trackpad.

Take great photos wherever you are
The Lumia’s wide range of imaging capabilities mean the photos you take on your phone are of higher quality than ever before. Added to this, the phone’s camera reacts to its environment so that you can get the best possible shot no matter the conditions. For example, if you’re trying to get a photo of your child on the soccer field, your phone will adjust its own shutter speed to capture the shot without the usual motion blur.

Make your phone child-friendly
For those parents who know all too well how it feels to have children who are more tech-savvy than you are, this one’s for you. Windows Mobile’s Kid’s Corner feature separates pre-selected content such as apps, videos and games that your kids can access. No more worries about them getting their hands on unsuitable content or sending an inappropriate email to your boss.

To activate this feature on your Lumia, go to Settings > Accounts > Kid’s Corner and select which content you’d like to make available. Once it’s set up, you can access Kid’s Corner by right swiping from the lock screen.

Track your movements to stay healthy
It’s never been easier to keep track of your health and fitness, with a little help from your Lumia. The phone tracks your movements so that your health apps can use the data. To customise how this works on your phone, go to Settings > Extras > Lumia Motion Data and select your options. You can switch between basic and detailed data collection to choose whether to include your standing, walking, running, driving and cycling data.

Making life easier
Besides these features, the Lumia also has a host of shortcuts to make using your phone as easy as possible. For example, the Outlook email app has gesture-based actions and shortcuts; SMS Messages can integrate with Skype; and the Quick Reply feature means you can see your messages and pull down to reply to them without switching from whatever you are doing.

Whatever you use your phone for – work or play – these features and shortcuts are designed to make your life easier. Give them a try and see how they work for you.

Lumia

0
0

How to improve your home environment with Windows apps

By: Rotimi Olumide, Director, Microsoft Windows Business Division Sub Saharan Africa & Indian Ocean Islands

Most people know that Windows 10 helps them to be more productive at work, but did you know it can also help you to be more productive at home too? Whether you simply want to manage your family’s schedule better, capture special memories or you’re planning to do some redecorating, here’s how Windows apps can help:

Keep track of your family’s busy schedule
Outlook.com makes it easy to share your Microsoft Calendar with the people you care about. All they need is a Microsoft account, and then it’s as simple as sharing permissions with them and controlling which parts of the calendar they can view and access. You can also share an online view-only link with people, who can then access it via Microsoft Outlook, iCal and Google Calendar.

If you’re a parent, this is the ideal way to keep track of your children’s school commitments and play dates, and make sure you never miss a recital or leave them stranded at school.

Share notes and important documents
Using your Microsoft account login gives you access to powerful cloud-based storage. OneDrive powers document sharing in Office 365, which allows multiple users to access, edit, comment and change a single document from any device. OneNote is a “catch-all” app for information, ideas and inspiration in any form, and makes accessing this information quick and effortless no matter where you are.

These features are the perfect sharing repository for your family, keeping everything safely in one place. Whether you’re grocery shopping and want to access the shopping list that your family has added to; you find an article for your daughter’s research project you want to save for her, with the relevant parts marked; or your whole family want to have their say on your latest inspiration for a home makeover, OneDrive and OneNote make collaborating and sharing easier.

Capture memories and inspiration
No matter if you live with family, friends or even alone, your home is the place where memories are created. Capture those special moments easily with the high quality camera on your Microsoft Lumia phone. Lumia phones’ wide range of imaging capabilities ensure your photos are always of a high quality. Best of all, it’s easy to create albums with just a few clicks and share these on your OneDrive account for safe keeping.

And, when you’re not snapping photos of your children or your friends, you might come across the inspiration for your next table setting or lounge remodel. Snap a few shots to remind yourself to get the creative juices flowing.

Get creative with a little help from technology
Talking about creative juices, there are several apps available to help you create your own little haven.

For inspiration, why not try out Houzz? The Houzz app is a digital repository of home-related ideas, tips and inspiration, with over eight million pictures of home decor and remodelling ideas.

Then, if you’re feeling really creative, try out the drawing and painting app, Fresh Paint. It’s been hailed for its ability to accurately mimic watercolour, oil, pencil, pen and pastel, so you could try your hand at creating your very own art for your home.

And what would a haven be without the right lighting? Ambieye is an app that connects with Philips Hue light bulbs and allows you to control their colour, intensity and brightness.

Optimise your home life
With an ever-greater part of our lives becoming digital, it makes sense that we capitalise on digital technology to make our home life more organised, our homes more comfortable and see our productivity at home increase.

Google Calendar..

Díky Office Mix můžete vytvářet prezentace obohacené o testové otázky a kvízy, vlastní mluvený audio a video záznam či vlastní kresby. žákům a studentům stačí pouze jakékoliv zařízení s internetovým prohlížečem. Učitel pak naopak vidí, kolik žáků si prezentaci prohlédlo, jak odpovídali na otázky či dokonce, kolik času strávili na jednotlivých snímcích. A Office Mix toho nabízí mnohem více.

[Print Management > Print Servers > Print Server > Drivers > Context Menu > Add Driver]

6. Von Windows 7 Client oder Windows 2008 R2 Server wird durch PrintBRM eine –NOBINBackup Datei der Druckerqueues von Windows 2003 SP2 Druckserver erstellt.

Es wird alles migriert außer den Treibern.

 > printbrm –B –S <servername> –F <file location> -nobin

 Beispiel:> printbrm –B –S 04win2k3 –f C:\Prbackup\04win2k3 - nobin

> Es müssen keine Fehlermeldungen erscheinen.

<DriverMap>

        <DRV old="Old Drivername" new="New Drivername”/>

</DriverMap>

> printbrm –R –S <servername> –F <file location> –C <config file location>

Beispiel:> printbrm –R –S 05win2k8r2 –F c:\prbackup\04win2k3 –C c:\prbackup\drvmapping.xml

„We will never be able to de-anonymize all Tor users all the time,“ heißt es dort. Und: „With manual analysis we can de-anonymize a very small fraction of Tor users.“
